Catching Up

By: Bronagh Fegan
Narrated by: Louise Ford, Margaret Cabourn-Smith, Carrie Quinlan, Grainne Maguire, Andy Goddard

Summary

Carol, Sarah, Samira and Mac were best friends at university. They were the bright young things who had the world on a string and shining futures ahead. Now, as they find themselves tipping into their 30-something lives of work, relationships and responsibilities, they meet up for a big reunion night out, ready to recapture their shared past. Because whilst things may not have worked out exactly to plan for any of them...at least they will always have the comfort of old friends whose lives are even more weird, skewed and off-centre than their own.

A razor sharp, witty character comedy with a warm heart which will appeal to anyone (female or male) who has ever had an awkward evening catching up after an age with old friends.

Enjoyable but not all that comedic

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I did enjoy listening to this, so I would call it time well spent, but it was only sporadically faintly amusing.

What could Bronagh Fegan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Hard to say.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The narrators were great. They made each of the characters very distinct and what comedy there was came as much from their delivery as from the writing.

Did Catching Up inspire you to do anything?

Nope.

It wasn't my cup of tea

The characters were not pleasant people - I didn't really care if they were friends or not friends. Sorry

Okay, just

This was okay, but I can't see the story progressing. Not sure I'd want to anyway.

Far from hilarious, but....

This was quite good. A good idea, with some good characters, and some good sharp dialogue. It just didn't work well as a sitcom. Would probably be better as a comic-drama.

Liked it

I liked this. Shame you couldn't do two, as I'd love more of this, but unfortunately it wasn't the best of the five.

Cringingly Unfunny and Shallow Female Characters

Would you try another book written by Bronagh Fegan or narrated by the narrators?

I doubt I'd bother with anything by the same writer but the narrators/actors arent to blame so I'd listen to them in something else.

Would you ever listen to anything by Bronagh Fegan again?

Possibly if it wasn't claiming to be comedy but the characterisation of women here was appalligly shallow, bitchy and pathetic - same old tropes and stereotypes.

What three words best describe the narrators’s performance?

Trying Their Best

What character would you cut from Catching Up?

To be honest most of them because they come across greatly as charicatures rather than characters, all quite written-by-numbers. Didn't engage me enough to learn names so the most annoying was the self-obsessed one with the fake American accent.

Any additional comments?

There are plenty of quality radio comedies with decent female characterisation and original plots as well as some actual laughs. This definitely isn't close on any of those points.

Fun girly half hour.

I liked the fun character voices and how the girls had different accents. This made it easy to tell the characters apart.
I would recommend this to any lady age 22 to 39

So close to reality it hurts

Any additional comments?

Liked it because it's well written and acted, sometimes it was hard to distinguish the characters, but at any rate I found it funny and entertaining.

Half an hour's easy listening

I enjoyed the story; easy on the ears and concentration if a little predictable. Lots of good one liners but no laugh out loud moment.
Performance was a little amateur with accents, especially American, slipping at times but not so as to spoil the story for me.

Not bad

An amusing half hour of old university friends meeting up for the first time in years. Very well scripted and subtle enough.
