About this listen

Among Jane Austen's favorite novels, and a key work in the rise of Romanticism, Camilla follows the story of three young women, from childhood to young adulthood, and their pursuit of matrimony.

Kind but naive Camilla is in love with Edgar Mandlebert, a handsome and noble young man, but must suffer a series of frequent misunderstandings that threaten their happy union. Intelligent Eugenia, destined to inherit her uncle's great wealth, is plagued with misfortune as she is left disfigured by smallpox and has men court her for financial gain only. Meanwhile their cousin, beautiful but selfish Indiana, never finds a fortune for her good looks. Accompanying them is a cast of memorable characters, such as the rowdy prankster Lionel, the dim-witted Mr. Dubster, and the scornful Miss Margland.

the narration was excellent. the story was fun and frivolous, in a similar vein to Jane austen who came after. A little longer and more toings and froings but overall an extremely enjoyable listen

very well read fun easy listening story

Fabulous performance by Lucy Scott but dreadful story. I really didn’t care what happened to Camilla by the end.

Ghastly Camila

I can see where Jane Austen got her ideas from. However she is much more concise. Sometimes the descriptions and the thoughts of the characters go on for a bit of a long time. I really enjoyed it and there is plenty of description of the practicalities of life and travel in those days of horse drawn vehicles , before the railways .

Jane Austen inspiration

I loved Evelina, but the stuffy and pretentious language of this book makes it a real trial!

Ms Burney should have focussed more on her storytelling and less on proving herself clever.
