Story
I'm sure your first question is: Can you actually learn a foreign language while you’re asleep? According to a Swiss research study in 2014, the answer is unassailably yes! In this study, a group of German speakers was given a list of unfamiliar Dutch words to study. Half were instructed to get some sleep while they listened to long lists of Dutch words and translations. The other half was instructed to stay awake. Four hours later, they were tested and the group that listened while they slept had significantly higher recall.

Commercialism Strikes Again!
The author is obviously a skilled language teacher and has come up with an excellent format for learners starting out on their long journey to acquire a new language. To the author I give five stars but the whole reading experience was ruined for me by the overt, intrusive and unavoidable commercialisation that surrounded every study session. One of the reasons I like to read is to escape the awful American - style commercialism that pervades and intrudes into every area of one's life with increasing regularity. Here is just one example: When I finished reading Cafe in Berlin, since I am a beginner, I wanted to reread the book. Silly me. I thought I was in control of my life. I thought, if I wanted to, I could simply reopen the 'book' I had long ago paid for and continue with my studies. No, first I must write a review, then tell anyone I know who gives a monkey's that I've read another book, then (forget language acquisition) give my attention to buying yet another 'book' that I won't be able to reread without going through all this again. If you see someone running down the middle of the road screaming, be gentle: es werde mir wahrscheinlich sein.

Great idea and well executed!
I thought these books were going to be a real struggle, the first book is read at what seems a painfully slow pace, however you quickly get used to it and appreciated why it's done - it enables you to clearly understand and repeat what is being said. The reading pace picks as as the series progresses. The stories are engaging and common vocabulary and phrases are repeated in different contexts so that they're readily absorbed. The books also use a lot of the simple past test in German because the stories are told from the point of view of the main character, Dino, so it's a great way to get used to saying things like "I said", "She said", "He bought" etc... There are a few odd sound effects that I don't really think add anything to the content but they're not irritating either and don't detract from what is being said, even for someone with hearing problems like me. Overall I'd thoroughly recommend these books to anyone learning German who's at advanced A1 or A2 level.

Slow, uneven pace, even for beginners
I bought the audiobook because I already have the text on Kindle. To be honest, it was disappointing that the audio wasn't free with the text, or the text free with the audio.
I realize this is for beginners, but the narration is far too slow. Each word is spoken at a reasonable pace, but the narrator pauses between almost every word! The pauses mean that if you use the speed settings to speed it up, it sounds very stacatto, and is really no good to listen to. If it had been spoken slowly at an even pace it would have been fine.
The stories themselves are quite interesting considering that they are in very simple German. However, due to the painfully slow and uneven pace I feel I have wasted my money.

What did you love best about Learn German With Stories: Café in Berlin ? 10 Short Stories for Beginners?
The narration matches the text in the ebook (also available in paperback). Each chapter is short, entertaining, and easy for a beginner. Mr. Klein is listed as the narrator, so you're hearing a native speaker read German. There are helpful (and non-instrusive) sound effects to accompany parts of the text. For instance, you might hear a crowd cheering when the text is about soccer. It never drowns out the narration. The narration is read very slowly, not at normal speed. This is helpful, but it would be even more helpful if the Audible book contained two parts, with the second part containing the narration read at normal speed.
What other book might you compare Learn German With Stories: Café in Berlin ? 10 Short Stories for Beginners to and why?
I don't think there is anything quite like this book or this series. They are very professionally done and the prices are extremely reasonable. You can listen while you're reading, or you can listen without the printed text, to test your listening comprehension.
Which character – as performed by André Klein – was your favorite?
He reads with enough expression to make it interesting, but not over-the-top, which would interfere with the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, it's not intended for that.
Any additional comments?
I've read and re-read the ebook versions of Mr. Klein's books, and the Audible version is a worthwhile addition. I would like it if the narration were read a second time at a much faster speed. This would only add about 20-30 minutes to the audiobook and it would not be necessary to include the sound effects, so it shouldn't be hard to do. I am looking forward to Audible versions of Mr. Klein's other books.

Great for Beginners!
This is the first book in German I decided to read and I got to say it is overall great for a A1/A2 level. I’m at an A2 level right now and this first book has been helping me improve my pronunciation little by little; as well as; increase my vocabulary. The storyline and Dino, the main character is fun. I’m planning on getting my hands on the sequel (:
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to start reading as a bundle the kindle version and the Audiobook. It helps a lot. However, I have to say, that if you’re rather used to listening people speak German the Audio might seem slow- paced at time. But bare with it because it’s to help with proper pronunciation.(you can change the speed in settings.)

Amazing Way to start learning German
I am kind of a person who prefers the natural way of learning the language which should start always by listening. This book hss been done for such a way. The way I am using the material is as follow:
I read the chapter silently , then I listen to the audio 2-3 time, then I translate the text (there is translated keywords at the end of each chapter). after then I spend 1 week just listening to the material with at least 5 times a day.
I am still learning and working on the material in such a way but what motivated me that after 3 weeks I was able to phrase basic statements in the German language and suddenly a week later I had a basic conversation with a taxi driver and a receptionist at the doctor clinic. thanks to the author.

R-e-a-l-l-y Slow Audio
Playing this audiobook at regular speed keeps it very slow and therefore helps learners recognize and absorb each word which is helpful for beginners. On my next re-listen I’ll increase the speed to get a more naturally flowing cadence. I enjoyed these ten stories and was able to grasp a lot more than I expected! I only gave it 4 (instead of 5) stars overall as I would have loved a PDF transcript to accompany this book. But it’s well worth it, and I recommend it!

Good for learning
I enjoyed the stories and the humor. This is a good way to reinforce your language skills and is not too fast. I will listen to it repeatedly, speeding it up, as it becomes more familiar. I also bought the book to read along.
