About this listen

Spurgeon's last 30 years, from the building of the Metropolitan Tabernacle to his death in 1892, saw long years of the full harvest of his youthful efforts. With a congregation of nearly 6,000 in the heart of London and a wider audience of perhaps a million to be addressed weekly through his printed sermon, Spurgeon not only sustained his productivity but even increased the quality of his work. But there is more to Spurgeon than the preacher: we see him also as author, as editor of a monthly magazine, as founder and director of his Pastors College, and organizer of two orphanages.

Throughout the autobiography, Spurgeon records those aspects of life that only an autobiography can: his family circle, the daily labor behind his public works, and the feelings which led him to resist the reformation of the Faith of the Churches. Above all, he records his experiences of God's grace.

You will want to have already read/listened to the first part of the biography which you will have to purchase separately. I am not sure whether Spurgeon had meant to write a full autobiography before he died, and ended up dying before he managed to complete this, but most of this second book is actually written by other people, with occasional inserts of his from sermons, writings etc. not true autobiography.

I really enjoyed listening to this - I find it much more inspiring listening to stories of what God's people have managed to do through his power, than books discussing theology. Same critique as with the first book - poor publication. Check your audio people before you publish! Lots of bits where the quality is poor, or it gets stuck on a word like an old record. Otherwise very enjoyable and a real edification for a Christian.

A worthwhile read for Christians

This is a wonderful window into the past and into that fascinating time when C.H.Spurgeon was at large in the world and the Lord God was doing amazing things through His faithful servant. An excellent listen!

I was delighted to discover these in audio format. These are 'top drawer' classics no Christian should be ignorant of. I have just finished the two-volume set (print version) after 2 years(!) and my infirm 14 year old son has just finished the audio version after 2 weeks - both print and audio versions are peerless. This Audible version thoroughly enjoyed by my son.Yes it is flowery in language but consider this - there are a tiny handful of people through the ages who have understood and communicated the gospel with as much faithfulness, clarity and success as Spurgeon. His prolific works justifiably enjoy a vast readership even today (e.g. Morning and Evening).

This 2nd half of Spurgeon's autobiography is the amazing testimony of what God can do to a man who is wholly committed to the Lord Jesus Christ. This will inspire the Lord's people to serve Him with greater faith, love and earnestness.
