About this listen

The International Butter Festival has come to town! When Harlow Torrent, part-time journalist and full-time Slip witch stumbles upon a dead body, frozen and drained of blood, she's pulled into a murder mystery.

Someone has murdered one of the Butter Festival competitors. Was it Zero Bend, punk sculptor extraordinaire with a history of violence? Perhaps Fusion Swan, a sleazy agent playing the publicity game when his clients meet their untimely end?

Between trying to run her struggling online newspaper, dealing with her highly caffeinated cousins Molly and Luce, fending off three meddling witch mothers who will do anything to get their daughters married off (including drugging food with magic potions) and great Aunt Cass who appears to be running an underground laboratory of some kind, Harlow barely has time to breathe, let alone solve a murder.

Romance certainly isn't on the cards either but the hot scruffy guy new to town seems to have other ideas....

I loved this audiobook- it’s original and funny, with great narration. The title put me off but I’m so glad I listened to it- definitely going to look for more books by this author.

Any additional comments?

I loved the humour in this novel. the magical element to the story was the catalyst to many funny incidents and gave the story an overall light feel.
The murder mystery itself was very interesting and I liked the supernatural aspect to the murder. Perfect for October reading!
This was my first murder mystery involving a family of witches and I found the whole story very entertaining. I would certainly be happy to read the rest of the series and find out what other zany adventures they get up to.

I received a copy in return for my honest review.

A fun mystery

At first, I found the characters a bit dislikeable and the story a bit dull. I stayed listening though and I am glad I did. The books connect well; each individual story is entertaining and the overall story gripped me. Definitely worth the listen.

It took time to get into but was worth it

I enjoyed this cozy mystery. The fun and laughs just kept coming, especially with the main character being a slip witch (which I had never heard of before) and her magic was hit or miss as to whether it turned out right. You also had the antics from the eccentric and secretive Aunt Cass, the matching mothers and hyper cousins to add to the entertainment and trouble. I normally get fed up with home life drama of match making and wish the author would just get back to investigating the case but I actually enjoyed the delightful family, even Harlow's sessions with a suicidal ghost were fun. The mystery was different with an unusual out come but for a paranormal cozy mystery it works well. I never did come up with the right killer. I have never heard of a butter carving festival but looked it up and it is actually a thing, who knew? I also looked to see if there were more books in the series. Yeah off to start the next book.
Small towns need something different to make sure they survive and with the current mayor who is willing to help the town grow it's not surprising to host International Butter Festival. The competition should bring in crowds especially with big name sculptors involved. However Harlow never expected to find one of the competitors dead, frozen and drained of blood. Magic isn't necessarily common knowledge in town but with the condition of the body the sheriff turns to Harlow for some of her unusual help. Can she help find a killer? Her mother and aunt's are to busy trying to find dates for Harlow and her cousins to help and turning to great aunt Cass is just asking for trouble. As,for her cousins they are busy trying to get to grips with a new coffee machine and avoiding the matching attempts. Good job Harlow's job as a reporter gives her access to the competition and suspects and her wonky magic might just give her the clue she needs to stop the soul sucker from striking again.
I liked the narrator. She help the magic come to life by giving an individual voice to all the characters.

Carving out a good mystery

I tried to read this story and found it was good to begin with. However I found it was too similar to a book I had already read so lost interest in continuing in the story. Might try reading it again but right now way too similar. It was too easy to predict what was going to happen next in the story. Was a good narration until I stopped reading.
