Summary

On a rugged Colorado mountain ridge, Mattie Cobb and her police-dog partner, Robo, make a grisly discovery - and become the targets of a ruthless killer.

Colorado's Redstone Ridge is a place of extraordinary beauty, but this rugged mountain wilderness harbors a horrifying secret. When a charred body is discovered in a shallow grave on the ridge, officer Mattie Cobb and her K-9 partner, Robo, are called in to spearhead the investigation. But this is no ordinary crime - and it soon becomes clear Mattie has a close personal connection to the dead man.

Joined by local veterinarian, Cole Walker, the pair scours the mountaintop for evidence and makes another gruesome discovery: the skeletonized remains of two adults and a child. And then, the unthinkable happens. Could Mattie become the next victim in the murderer's deadly game?

A deranged killer torments Mattie with a litany of dark secrets that call into question her very identity. As a towering blaze races across the ridge, Cole and Robo search desperately for her - but time is running out.

Fanatic Edition of the Timber Creek Series

Each new book Mizushima’s writing gets better and better. Wu’s narration was just as skillful as the previous books. I will without a doubt buy any audiobook by this pair. I absolutely love this series! If you’re not an animal lover with respect for small town life you might not enjoy this series as much but it’s still a darn good story.

Wonderful book

If I could, I'd give more stars. Keeps you on a fast paced ride from the start. Every time you think the plot is ending it suddenly jerks you in a new and interesting direction. Can hardly wait for installment 3.I also like how author creates such character and personality with Robo. Not just a dog tossed into the pkot. An integral part of the story. His character is well developed. Really love this author and these characters.

Another great listen.

This was another fantastic book. Some books drag on and never seem to end, not true for the K9 series. I can't wait for the next book #5 please.

Excellent book

Margaret Mizushima has crafted a story full of unexpected twists that keep you guessing. One of the best I’ve read/listened to this year. Nancy Wu have a wonderful performance and really did bring it all to life. I highly recommend this book/audiobook.

Lives Up to the Series

I enjoy this series which involves, Mattie Cobb, a young female deputy sheriff canine handler. The setting is in the Colorado mountains in and around the small community of Timber Creek. The characters and setting increase the novels' appeal, but for me, it's the relationship Mattie has with her German Shepherd partner, Robo, that most attracts me. I live with 6 Belgian Malinois and have been involved with raising 13 puppies for the DoD Breeding Program so working dogs fascinate me. Mals are very different from GSDs, physically and in temperament, although to the casual observer they can be mistaken for each other. Robo is most definitely a GSD.

The author must have had experience with, or carefully researched, working dogs especially GSDs, because much of what she describes in the training, deployment, and relationship with the handler ring true with what I have observed in military trainers and handlers. Robo is a dog. He is not a furry human. His skills, talents, and limitations are those of an excellent working dog. Too many of the K-9 novels attribute impossible characteristics to their working dog characters, both law enforcement and military. This series seldom, if ever, does that. Robo cannot do the impossible, and therefore I enjoy reading about his relationship with Mattie and what they are able to accomplish as a team. The truth of what a well-trained, dedicated canine team can do is amazing enough, and exaggeration merely detracts.

These novels are not life-altering works of literary fiction, but I find them enjoyable. While the Belgian Malinois is my special breed, I greatly admire the loyalty and stability demonstrated by Robo as a GSD, as well as the devotion Mattie and others have for him. Throughout the series, with each of the books, all of the characters have developed and their relationships have deepened. I like the series very much, this last novel included.

I didn't see that coming!

The ending was a surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have listened to all 3 in the series. I liked the character development from book to book, the courage of Mattie and the journey to find out who done it. Loved me some Robo.
