Kiin is awoken by the anguished voice of her spirit screaming "as shrill as an oyster catcher's cry" as she mourns the cold blooded murder of her husband Amgigh. The text directions are very clear. But they are totally ignored by the narrator as she recites in a flat monotone, "Amgigh, Amgigh" .After killing her husband, the Walrus Hunter, Raven, has taken Kiin away from her tribe, her baby and her true love, and her spirit is screaming. She is mourning, she is in agony. and yet Holly Fielding sees fit to merely continue in her usual flat, emotionless voice. She insults this wonderful story with her monotone delivery. it is a story full of emotional highs and lows as it tells of the incredible sacrifice Kiin makes to save her tribe from the cold blooded hunter, Raven, and the trials and tribulations of many tribes.

All the characters have the same voice. She cuts sentences in half where there is no comma or full stop, and confusingly continues different paragraphs that describe different tines and places in a single flow.
Her voice is also unpleasant to listen to in other ways - nasal, with a blocked nose, and (to my English ears) sloppy, her strong American accent mangling the words. Water is "wadder", mountain is "moun'n". I know this is just an accent, but added to all the other irritations it just helped ruin my favourite story in yet another way.

Holly also mispronounces or decides on several different pronunciations of many of the Aleut words and names - most notably (and irritatingly) Kiin's name!!! It clearly states in the text of the paperback version (which I have) that Kiin's name is pronounced "keen" — NOT "ki-in"! She also mispronounces several commonly used words still in use today, the most annoying being "cache", a word used several times in every chapter, which is repeatedly pronounced "cashay" instead of "cash". This drove me demented! Every time she said "cashay" I was muttering through gritted teeth "CASH, it's CASH, woman!!"

The third instalment in the ivory carver series, fantastically well researched as if the author has spent time living among the ancient seal hunters, whale hunters and walrus hunters of the story. based on an ancient Aleut seal hunter legend, the story is tragic, heroic, a tale of survival and love against all odds. Every nuance, gesture, intonation and custom is captured in the text. Unfortunately it is not carried through into the narration. The narrator's voice is unpleasant to listen to - nasal and bunged up as if she has a nasty respiratory virus. She stumbles over some words, mispronounces others, places full stops and breaths in the middle of sentences, smacks her lips. The most irritating thing about her narration is the way she pronounces "cache" as "cashay" - this word must be repeated about a hundred times throughout the three books, so the irritation grates constantly like the gravel inside an oyster shell. I have only bought all three books because they are not available narrated by anybody else, much to my dismay. Even the author was horrified when I wrote to her about this. I would buy the books all over again if they could be re-narrated by a decent narrator. As it is, this is all there is, so we must make do, for the sake of this enthralling story.

The irritating narrator and questionable pronunciation of words spoiled what should be an exciting book. The plot was a simple, stupid and repetitive…..quite “Novella”.

Story was difficult from a feminist viewpoint, but was gripping. Unfortunately the narration was a drone and the pronunciation of certain words, ‘cache’ in particular was annoying. Stuck with it and enjoyable overall. Thank you.
