When you are successful, it is easy to take your health for granted—until life suddenly changes direction and everything you once depended on begins to disappear.

Broken in London is the true story of one man's journey from financial success to financial breakdown as chronic pain, depression and anxiety slowly change every part of his life.

What begins as unexplained pain grows into something much larger. His health declines. Independence becomes harder to maintain. Medication, uncertainty and difficult decisions replace the life he once knew.

As he searches for answers, he finds himself struggling to be heard. Health services focus on separate symptoms while no one seems to see the whole person. Then government support assessments bring further pressure, with reports that fail to reflect his daily reality.

He becomes increasingly lost in a system of procedures and bureaucracy, repeatedly asked to prove an illness that has already taken so much from him.

This is not a story of perfect recovery. It is the honest account of a survivor still struggling to understand the connection between chronic pain and mental health, the consequences of delayed support and what remains when health, identity and financial security collapse together.

At the centre of the book is a question:

Why is early depression not recognised and protected before it develops into a deeper collapse?

Why does support so often arrive only after a person has lost their health, confidence, work and financial stability?

For anyone living with chronic illness, depression, anxiety, financial hardship or the exhausting pressure of being unheard, this memoir offers honesty, recognition and hope.

It also offers feedback from the other side—from the person sitting in the appointment, waiting for the decision and living with the consequences after the report has been written. It shows health professionals, assessors and decision-makers what their procedures can look and feel like from the life behind the paperwork.

Adam Highgate writes in a way that feels very personal and real. You can feel that the words come from lived experience, not from someone trying to sound clever or dramatic. There is pain, frustration, humour and hope throughout, and at times it feels like listening to someone finally say out loud what many people quietly go through.

Broken in London really touched me. It feels honest, warm and very real. You can feel the pain, the loneliness and the pressure, but also the small moments of hope that keep you going. What stayed with me most is how it shows that someone can look completely fine on the outside while carrying so much inside. It’s a simple, emotional book that makes you feel close to the story.
