Story
Providence, RI, 1986. Twenty-nine-year-old Danny Ryan is a hard-working longshoreman, loving husband, loyal friend and occasional 'muscle' for the Irish crime syndicate that oversees much of the city. He yearns for something more and dreams of starting over fresh, someplace far away. But when a modern-day Helen of Troy triggers a war between rival mob factions, Danny is embroiled in a conflict he can’t escape. Now it is up to him to step into the breach to protect his family, the friends who are closer to him than brothers and the only home he’s ever known.

Story
Jack Wade, a claims adjuster for California Fire and Life Mutual Insurance Company, is one of the best arson investigators around. He's a man who knows fire, who can read the traces it leaves behind like a roadmap. When he's called in to examine an unusual claim, the tracks of the fire tell him that something's wrong. So wrong that he violates his own cardinal rule - "You don't get personal, you don't get emotional. Whatever you do, you don't get involved" - and plunges into the case.

Story
Detective sergeant Denny Malone leads an elite unit to fight gangs, drugs and guns in New York. For 18 years he's been on the front lines, doing whatever it takes to survive in a city built by ambition and corruption, where no one is clean. What only a few know is that Denny Malone himself is dirty: he and his partners have stolen millions of dollars in drugs and cash. Now he's caught in a trap and being squeezed by the Feds, and he must walk a thin line of betrayal, while the city teeters on the brink of a racial conflagration that could destroy them all.

Story
When Tim Kearney draws a license plate across the throat of a Hell's Angel, he's pretty much a dead man. It's his third crime and, according to California law, that gives him "life without the possibility of parole". Killing a Hell's Angel also makes him a dead man on any prison yard in California. That's when the DEA makes Kearney an offer: impersonate the late, legendary dope smuggler Bobby Z so that the agency can trade him to Don Huertero, northern Mexico's drug kingpin, for a captured DEA agent.

Summary
A riveting collection of original fiction from the revered number one international best-selling author of The Cartel trilogy and The Force
No matter how you come into this world, you come out broken....
In six intense, haunting short novels, Don Winslow returns to the themes that are the hallmarks of his acclaimed body of work – crime, corruption, vengeance, justice, loss, betrayal, guilt, and redemption - to explore the savagery and nobility that drive and define the human condition.
In Broken, Winslow creates a world of high-level thieves and low-life crooks, obsessed cops and jaded private detectives, dope dealers and government agents, bounty hunters and fugitives. Diverse and richly drawn, these characters - some familiar, others new - are lost souls driving without headlights on the dark highway of modern America.
Set in New Orleans and Hawaii, Southern California and south Texas, each story in this collection is distinctively Winslow, shaped by his trademark blend of insight, humanity, humor, drama and consummate literary craftsmanship.
A powerful, gripping collection of tales that will become classics of crime fiction, Broken is Don Winslow at his nerve-shattering, heartbreaking best.
Critic reviews

"You can’t ask for more emotionally moving entertainment." (Stephen King)
"This is an outstanding sextet in which — praise be! — ‘love and loyalty trump the law’. It is fast, furious and very funny.” (The Times)

Brutally Brilliant Hard Boiled Noir
Don Winlsow is a genius. Let's get that straight from the start. And this book is utterly brilliant. Channelling Elmore Leonard, Raymond Chandler, Ernest Hemingway and other crime fiction legends (as well as himself) these six novellas are a master class in the art of crime fiction. Having read all of 'The Don's' work I was delighted to see some of my favourite characters reprised albeit in cameo roles for some. Long time fans will love this book and new readers will also enjoy it. Don Winslow is in 'the tube' and it is gorgeous.

A master at work
Winslow writes with such authenticity as to the dark side of the American dream. All of these stories are engaging and when he picks up the pace to describe a shoot out, robbery or chase there are very few writers that can match him because he has built his characters with such depth you have as a reader a real sense of peril.
