Sam West made every one of Graham Greene’s words come alive and the story even more frightening than the very familiar film version that starred Richard Attenborough as Pinkie.

Brighton Rock is an atmospheric and dark novel, the characters feel like people you might pass in a pub, unaware of their history. At the level of the page I loved this book. The writing and imagery is superb. My main qualm is spending so much time with the central villain, who's malice feels unexplained. This is not a book I'd recommend everyone, but I found it very memorable, particularly its themes of conscience, damnation, and hell. It also has what all my favourite novels have which is a strong sense of place and is immersively read by the narrator.
