Summary

Bright Angel is the story of a lost child, his A.I. sister, an ex-Navy SEAL and a disgraced climate scientist. Together, they may just form humanity’s best hope for a future on Earth.

After a prolonged cycle of flood and drought, the United States is on the verge of civil war over dwindling resources. Tammy Cohen is compelled to set out on a journey across a war and climate-ravaged America, setting sail to the far north of the world in order to try and procure ancient drought-resistant seeds. What is waiting for her there is beyond her wildest imaginings.

Epic compelling story brilliantly read

This is an excellent apocalyptic tale. People have ruined the world but because this author has a relentless curiosity for what makes human beings resilient and for what makes them hope - this story is just as much about beginnings as it is about endings. The nature of love, faith, choice - all these subjects are insightfully explored as Kraiem pushes his characters to their emotional and physical limits. Oh, and he’s really good on all those things we’re going to miss so bad come the end of everything - any one for a drop of ersatz milk protein in their freshly printed out cup of coffee? One last thing - the reader, Sarah Jane Drummey is just superb. I couldn’t wait for more of her in my ears …

breath taking

Awesome story telling, profoundly brought to life by Sarah Jane's lilting voice. A perfect marriage, that has to be heard to be believed.
I was transported around the globe, through time and in and out of my own life and emotional landscape on this outstanding oddessy.

When everything is lost, what choices do we make

Eliam Kraiem has created a post-apocalyptic world that feels eerily close to our own reality, just beyond an arm's reach. Yet, what really sets this novel apart, is its exploration of how people are propelled by the narratives they construct for themselves in a world that is without rules and laws and social constructs. This is where the story truly excels.

We embark on a journey that spans from the remote northern icy reaches of the world to the desiccated, drought-stricken landscapes of midwestern America. We accompany two characters, each only partially certain of their mission, yet they find solace in each other and are propelled with stories of their past. Along this journey, we witness grand-scale devastation and chaos, once-thriving cities lie in ruins and small communities cling to ideals of a long destroyed world.

Along the way, it is in the conversations between these traumatised, post-apocalyptic survivors , that the true magic of this story unfolds. In these conversations, we hear the stories we tell ourselves, our internal narratives, and how they shape the decisions we make. Amidst this there is a young adult, possessing a clear-sightedness, untouched by human influence who has the most important decision to make.

I would have loved more moments with some of the other characters. To know more about Andy's decision to fulfil a long-expired obligation, longer time to explore how Adam's choice unfolds, and right back at the start, to linger a little longer with Louise when she makes that first pivotal decision.

I listened to the audiobook read by SarahJane Drummey. She inhabits every character so beautifully, each character - honourable and flawed. She brings an other-worldliness that is so befitting of the amazing setting that the author has created.

I loved this audiobook. For those who love the books of Emily St. John Mandel, you are bound to enjoy this novel.

A thought-provoking adventure for idealists

This was a compelling listen from start to finish. Hopeful, wise, humane, imaginative, singularly realised.
