Summary
Jemima Pardon, a paramedic with a daft name and chronic asthma, has never had much in the way of good luck. The only things she attracts are traumatic jobs, and no one wants to work with her for long. But when Jem bumps into devil-may-care police officer Rosie Jones, her fortunes seem to be changing. Rosie is bright and funny, and she doesn’t mind that Jem can’t go far without her inhaler.
Things are looking up, until a suspicious death draws Jem and Rosie into an investigation that spirals beyond their control. As torrential rain floods the city, they face a battle to survive if they’re ever going to have a chance at finding love.

A True Masterpiece
Cari is the only author I know who can take a serious subject and throw in some northern humour.
Throw in a police officer Rosie and Jen a paramedic with asthma. Throw in lots of rain and missing children. A true classic.

Cari at her best.
I thought I’d written a review for this!
It’s BRILLIANT. It’s heartwarming, funny, heartbreaking and a slice of life from the northern part of England. The language is pure English at its very best, with phrases and idioms set to test the non-native listener but oh, it’s so worthwhile, just settling in to this cracking story. I’ve just re-listened for the uncountable time. Always something to entertain even though the story is now so familiar.
As with all of Cari Hunter’s stories it is unputdownable (is there such a word? 🤣) and I am so looking forward to her next offering, both in print and on audio.

This one ticked all the boxes, it may be my all time favourite. A blossoming romance between a luckless paramedic and a Billy bonkers police officer, and a murder to spice things up with laugh out loud moments. Nicola Victoria Vincent's narration just knocks it out of the park. An absolute must! Oh and don't forget to buy a Twix you'll need one??

Not for me
Well narrated but the humour seemed forced and the 'sexual chemistry' just didn't work for me. It was meant to be funny but although I smiled for a while, that soon dissipated into boredom and I decided enough was enough and didn't bother to read further - so no idea how it ended!

Have listened to it twice in one week.
... and have ordered myself a hard copy.
I feel like this might be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the combination Cari Hunter and Nicola Victoria Vincent. Down the rabbit hole I go!
But in all seriousness, this was a wonderful book. Some genius writing in places that have you laughing out loud one moment and sobbing the next. It's rare that I find an author and a narrator that work so well together as these two do. Also it's great to have more British based fiction starring lesbians.
So if you like a slow build romance, interesting characters, an edge of your seat plot AND you're debating about whether to get this or not, get it. You will not be disappointed.
I'm off to buy some more of Cari's books now!

Good on paper, even better on audio. Nicola Victoria Vincent is marvelous! And so long as Cari Hunter keeps on writing...I’ll keep on reading her books. There’s something about her characters that makes you miss them once the book is done. Which is why I’m sure I’ll read this a third and fourth time, despite the mountain of “to-be-read” books I’ve got piling up on my various digital shelves.

Great romance.
I was thoroughly entertained by the characters in this book. It’s a great romance with a character who’s always getting the crappy end of things and a a police officer who is there to back her up. The drama in this book is secondary to the characters’ romance but it gets resolved nicely. Definitely enjoyed this book. The narrator was clear and great about different character voices. This author never disappoints.

Nicola Victoria Vincent is wonderful
This is the fourth book by Cari Hunter that I’ve listened to, and the fourth narrated for her by Nicola Victoria Vincent. They are a wonderful combination. Cari’s writing, both the dialogue and the prose is top notch. She weaves a true STORY into every book she writes, as well as enjoyable characters, action scenes, and romances. In fact her books are so dynamic, they almost seem made to be performed on audio. And Nicola is the perfect narrator to bring it all to life.

Great book, awesome narration
Breathe was the first book I ever read by Cari Hunter, in 2019. Since then, I've listened to quite a few and Nicola Victoria Vincent's narrations are invariably fantastic.
I wrote this in my original review: The whole plot around missing teens was well thought and intriguing, the action scenes were breathtaking (Jem is not the only one who needs to remember to breathe, at times). Yet what I enjoyed most was the characters. I enjoyed meeting Rosie and Jem most of all, and laughed out loud more than once at their dialogues, but I also liked Harriet, Ferg, Jem’s dad (I wish there had been more about her mum) and both women’s colleagues, and enjoyed disliking Steph.
I loved the audiobook version as much as I loved reading the book, with the added pleasure of an excellent narration.

Delightful... to say the least...
Suspense. Mystery. Adventure. Romance. Humor. A little angst. And HEA. Charming. Irresistible. The characters are fabulous. Strong sense of place. And the narration is outstanding -- Manchester accent and all. Just be prepared: the author does not "dumb down" the authentic slang/colloquialisms for Americans. ( I paused it from time to time to look them up and it didn't detract at all !) This is my first Cari Hunter book and I am obviously impressed... make that blown away.
