AS HEARD ON STEVEN BARTLETT'S 'DIARY OF A CEO'

There is nothing more essential to our health and wellbeing than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat 25,000 times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences.

In Breath, a book that has changed countless lives, James Nestor travels the world to discover the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices, discovering that if we make even slight adjustments to the way we inhale and exhale, we can:

  • Jump-start athletic performance
  • Reduce anxiety and stress, and boost productivity
  • Halt snoring, allergies, asthma and autoimmune disease
  • Ease headaches and sinus problems

None of this should be possible, and yet it is. Drawing on thousands of years of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge studies in pulmonology, psychology, biochemistry and human physiology, Breath turns the conventional wisdom of what we thought we knew about our most basic biological function on its head.

You will never breathe the same again.

'Who would have thought something as simple as changing the way we breathe could be so revolutionary for our health, from snoring to allergies to immunity? A fascinating book, full of dazzling revelations' Dr Rangan Chatterjee

'If there's one book you read this year, make it this one'
'Who would have thought something as simple as changing the way we breathe could be so revolutionary for our health? James Nestor is the perfect guide to the pulmonary world and has written a fascinating book, full of dazzling revelations' (Dr Rangan Chatterjee)
'In the past few years, there have been several potentially life-changing books, from Matthew Walker's Why We Sleep and Shane O'Mara's In Praise of Walking, to Norman Doidge's The Brain's Way of Healing. Breath deserves a place alongside such volumes. Read it, and I guarantee you will want to change the way you breathe' (Evening Standard)
'This book is awesome. Most people have no idea how to do breathing exercises and how beneficial they are. I learned a lot from James Nestor's book. Over the last few weeks I've been using the methods I learned and I can tell you there are absolutely some real benefits to be had from this' (Joe Rogan, on Instagram)
A fascinating scientific, cultural, spiritual and evolutionary history of the way humans breathe - and how we've all been doing it wrong for a long, long time. I already feel calmer and healthier just in the last few days, from making a few simple changes in my breathing, based on what I've read. Our breath is a beautiful, healing, mysterious gift, and so is this book (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love)
'James Nestor's fascinating new book is playful and optimistic' (Spectator)

This was really interesting. I thought I already knew a lot about breathing, I’ve been meditating a while & doing Taoist breathing techniques. This was interesting, well written & comprehensive. The techniques at the end was a nice touch & definitely make this one to get on audible rather than paper.

Comprehensive & useful

I had Pneumonia 2 years ago(I was 29) so I was looking for breathing exercises to help me build some sort of strength / Lung capacity back.
I first seen James Nestor on the Joe Rogan podcast and was hooked straight away and was in dis belief at what information he came out with.

Then I read the book and I could not believe it. I was shocked at some of it(A good shocked). I would literally put the book down and go to my girlfriend and friends and tell them what I learned. No one believed me haha. Until they looked it up.

I would say to anyone regardless if this book is your sort of thing or not. You have to give this book a chance. It has changed the way I live and even think about things from day to day.

I have read the the book but now I'm listening to the audio book.

Blown away by this book.

Such an insightful book. Since listening to the first chapter I have shut my mouth and practiced only nose breathing. I can safely say as someone who has always suffered with sleep and anxiety I have been sleeping deeper (right through the night!) and I feel much calmer and more focused amongst many other positive changes. James also talks about teachers, books and studies which I have taken note of and have been researching into further. My family, friends and colleagues have now all heard the shared wisdom learnt and the power of nose breathing and I'll continue to spread the word! I'm not one for righting reviews but I thought this book was fantastic and feel it needs to be heard.

if you don't nose get to nose (couldn't resist)

I'm on my third time through this book. There is so much in there I'm still picking up fresh nuggets. I see others have complained about the length of the book and the fact they thought it could have been briefer and got to the point quicker. I disagree. The author takes you a long on his journey to discovering the transformational power of nose Breathing. Why is should be seen as a lost art and not new science. I learnt more from the stories and history than the breathing techniques at the end. If you're after just the techniques don't bother with the book. You'll be disappointed. But if you want to learn why it's so important and the benefits, buy the book.

So simple yet transformational

I absolutely loved this book. It was so interesting and in fact I’ve just bought the hardback too so that I can flip through it. I want to listen to it again. I really liked James Nestor’s voice, however it was ever so slightly soporific and at times I felt my mind wandering when I didn’t want it to and I had to rewind a bit. Even so, this is one of my favourite of all time audio books.

Brilliant!
