About this listen

Tampa Sentinels Captain Hayes Montgomery has hero-worshipped Morgan Reynolds his entire career, watching as the larger-than-life hockey star has racked up stats that always seemed unreal. Unattainable. Unreachable.

Until Hayes himself is labeled “the next one” and to his surprise, he and Morgan end up on the same team together, playing for Team USA in a nation versus nation tournament.

Now Hayes’ hero isn’t just his teammate, but his linemate. They’re hot on the ice, and despite Morgan’s straight reputation, off it too.

It’s only ten days, but it’s the best ten days of his life. That shouldn’t be long enough for a hockey crush to morph into a real crush, but Hayes falls head over heels, fling-himself-off-a-cliff, wildly in love with Morgan, anyway.

They don’t play on the same team or even on the same coast. Normally, they’re never in the same zip code, but that doesn’t change Hayes’ feelings—or his regret when the fling ends.

Fast forward six years. Morgan’s retired, Hayes is writing his own name in the record books, and he’s sure he’s over it. Over him.

But then Morgan arrives in Tampa to watch his rookie son play for the Sentinels.

He doesn’t want to be hung up on his teammate’s dad, but it doesn’t matter how long it’s been or what he’s tried. Morgan still makes Hayes’ knees weak.

And when it turns out Morgan has his own Hayes’ shaped regret?

Maybe they can finally find their way back to each other again.

Breakaway Goals is a MM hockey standalone romance, but spins off from Beth's Portland Evergreens series.

This was just lovely!!! There were definitely some metaphorical feet kicking moments. I went into this forgetting that it was going to be Morgan & Hayes’ story and I was so excited once the narration actually began.

We get a fully fleshed out backstory of their time at the four nations tournament 6 years in the past, which was previously mentioned briefly when we first met Morgan & Hayes in On Thin Ice. And then the pain when it inevitably fell apart and the fallout of that.

The second half of the story focuses on them now in the present, 6 years after their initial love affair, and how Morgan is able to grovel his way back into Hayes heart (though he really never left it).

It was just lovely all the way thru & is officially my favorite Beth Bolden book!

Absolutely loved it!

It feels like it took forever for these two to get their HEA because of all the hint drops from previous books but it was absolutely worth the wait.
At times I wanted to smack them both because of their behavior but they thankfully got it together for their HEA.
I especially enjoyed seeing Hayes make Morgan work for his second chance.
His redemption arc was well worth the wait.
He was finally vulnerable and truthful with Hayes.
Darcy Stark did an amazing job narrating and bringing these characters to life. It feels like it took forever for these two to get their HEA because of all the hint drops from previous books but it was absolutely worth the wait.

These were great short stories.
I loved seeing the different men find their way to trust, be vulnerable, heal, and find love once again.

I was really looking forward to this, Morgan and Hayes both intrigued me and I was delighted to see they were getting their own story. Despite the long separation, this was compelling and heart-wrenching, and I was 100% supportive of Hayes. Shout out to Darcy Stark, the narrator, doing Morgan's trademark growl for an entire freaking book was impressive. Could have been edited down some, it was a lot of audio hours, but overall a good listen.

I've been curious about this story for a little while and I wondered how the author would deal with Morgan and Hayes relationship after we found out about them in the previous two books. Was Morgan salvageable after he was such a massive jerk in Finn's book? And Hayes was hurt, really hurt by Morgan if the conversations in Zach's book were any guide.
And so we get a book of two halves, before the ghosting and after, years later when Finn comes to play for Hayes team.
The first part had that new forbidden romance feel, but it was hard to completely enjoy it because I knew what was coming. I actually liked the second half better. Hayes is out and proud by this point and, of course, still madly in love with Morgan (we know this from Zach's book). I loved the redemption of Morgan. Morgan's interactions with Jacob are some of my favourite things in this book.
Overall, an enjoyable hockey second chance romance with a slight age gap.
Darcy Stark does an excellent job with the narration as usual.

Even though it has only been just over a month since I read this book, I was eager to listen to the audiobook and as I listen to my audiobooks whilst walking to walk, I had a permanent smile on my face.
Darcy Starks narration brought Morgan and Hayes to life and at times I was laughing out loud with some of the comments, especially at the start when Hayes went all fanboy and it hit him that he was playing on the same team as Morgan. You can feel the passion they had for each other and the betrayal resonating more as I listened emphasising how that one moment hurt them both.
The comradery between Morgan and Jacob showed how much they did respect each other.
As with the book I will returning to the story and whether I am listening to it or reading it, I will always enjoy Morgan and Hayes
