Die Schattenseite der Entwicklung: Sklaverei. Doch als Zweig in den 30er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts Rio besucht, lernt er eine tolerante Gesellschaft kennen, die ihm, dem in Europa Verfolgten, Hoffnung für die Zukunft gibt.
