About this listen

A true story of surviving the worst and discovering the magic of everyday.

How would you live differently if life gave you a second chance?

Brian Pennie shouldn’t be alive today. His drug addiction was so bad that he was deemed too much of a risk for detox. Determined to confront his demons, he went cold turkey at home. On 8 October 2013, he was finally clean after 15 years of heroin addiction and something extraordinary happened: the world suddenly became beautiful. Given a second chance at life, he devoured every minute of it.

Bit by bit he rebuilt his world, returning to university to study neuroscience in a bid to understand the source of his suffering. In this incredibly honest and inspirational narrative, Brian tells the story of how he turned a seemingly hopeless existence into a rich and rewarding life, showing that change is always possible, no matter how stuck we feel.

The turnaround that Brian made in his time in recovery is extraordinary. Inspirational is a term we throw about, so I am reluctant to use it, but it is the most fitting. Brian tells his story with truth illustrating the twists and turns of both addiction and recovery with no veneer. It is a real skill to give detail while keeping the pace, but Brain is a master. A must-read for anyone who enjoys the story of triumph over challenge!

Extraordinary story of recovery

An ispirational story, descriptively told. Tugs at a range of emotions, I didn't want it to end.

This is the best book I've read in as long as I can remember . It's a story of such honesty, vulnerability , courage and finally recovery and hope from an adverse childhood and addiction. It's a book for anybody that wants to be inspired and helped in self development. Thank you Brian Pennie for sharing your story , it will help many . Dec Murphy
