About this listen

Book four in The Plumber's Mate Mysteries series

Death is what happens while you’re making other plans....

The last thing newly engaged plumber Tom Paretski needs is to stumble over another dead body. He’s got enough on his mind already as the reality of his impending marriage sinks in. Not only is his family situation complicated, but his heroism at a pub fire has made him a local celebrity, and now everyone knows about his psychic talents - and wants a piece of them.

Hired to recover a missing necklace, Tom and his fiancé, private investigator Phil Morrison, find themselves trying to unmask a killer. And there’s no shortage of suspects, including the local bishop.

As Tom and Phil try to uncover the truth, they’re pulled in all directions by the conflicting pressures of their families and their own desires. But the murderer they’re up against is a ruthless schemer who won’t baulk at killing again. If Tom and Phil don’t watch out, their love - and all their plans for the future - could be blown down like a house of straw.

NOTE: This is a lightly edited reprint of a previously published novel.

The story premise is good and the characters are likeable. The narration was good though not to my taste.

Enjoyable Story

I’m not sure what it is about this series that has me hooked but I love it. It could be the fact that it all seems a bit real at times, that you could be in the pub and see Tom and his best friend Gary having a drink and a gossip, or see Tom and his now fiancé Phil having a pint and not be able to keep their hands off each other. Even the murders could happen to people you know personally. Whatever it is this series is a real page turner, with so many twists and turns and red herrings and whilst trying to solve the murders Tom and Phil are meeting the parents, discussing the wedding venue, picking out dates and deciding where to live, normal everyday things that they fit in around Tom’s plumbing job and Phil’s PI business.

Phil is still trying to get Tom to develop his ‘gift’ and now he has his sister Cherry on his case as well. Tom has always been reluctant. His gift for finding things that have been hidden has turned up more dead bodies than he would like and when he came out of the last book a hero, suddenly people knew he had psychic tendencies and he was in the local papers! When his gift lets him down he reluctantly admits that he would be sad to lose it.

Special mention to my favourite character Dave. He is hilarious and is a good mate of Tom’s, overweight, middle aged, his wife is about to have their baby as they have started all over again now their two kids are adults, and he is so down to earth, says exactly what he thinks and begs Tom never to talk about his sex life!

There are some wonderful and crazy characters in these books that I have come to love and each book introduces some awful ones, the sort of characters that really deserve to become the next victim.

As usual our hero’s find themselves in the sights of the killer and poor Tom has another visit to the hospital and this time his number was almost up!

If you are looking for an enjoyable read with murders, mystery, low angst and a wonderful deepening relationship and with plenty of humour then give this brilliant series a go.
