'A cracking read' – Susan Calman

'Stuart MacBride is an automatic must-read for me . . . always fast, hard, authentic – and different' – Lee Child, author of the Jack Reacher series

Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Val McDermid, Blood, Rust and Steel is darkly funny and gripping Scottish crime at its very best.

All good things must come to an end . . .

Acting Detective Inspector Roberta Steel has never been shy, but she’s finally retiring. After thirty years of policing Aberdeen’s underbelly, she’s all set for her twilight years to feature gardening gloves, afternoon tea, crosswords puzzles, and shouting at the telly.

So, when a body turns up in a wheelie bin, it looks like an excellent way to round off her career and go out with a bang. But the Northeast of Scotland isn’t finished with her yet:

There’s a violent protest to stop; far-right populist politicians, and sketchy government spooks; a by-election; drugs, dogs, and baby-doll nighties; and a desperate ex-colleague, begging her for help.

With only her Queen Street Irregulars for backup, and the top brass desperate to get shot of her, these final few weeks might just be the death of her . . .

Really enjoyed this one a stunning first solo outing for Roberta Steel who I loathed in the Logan books but found myself appreciating here . Hopefully there will be further outings for the retired detective

I couldn’t take any more of the character called Tufty. I’m affronted that the author would think readers/listeners could find the way that this clown speaks at all believable. Beyond annoying. Would probably have been a good read without that character. Made me remember why I didn’t finish a past book featuring Tufty.

Had to give up halfway through.

not the best of Stuart MacBride. The characters we have come to like over previous books are rather strained in this book.

the silly comments from 'tufty'

Great read! It was funny, engaging, and had a great storyline. I loved that Robbie has been softened a little, but not enough to lose the qualities that make her such a character.my only gripe is that we have a wait to the next Roberta book. Narration was excellent!

MacBride at his best

I haven't even finished it yet but I'm so annoyed by the change of narrator. Roberta had no problem making her feelings known when she was voiced by a man so I don't know why someone decided she needed a female narrator. Tufty just doesn't sound the same. Please release it again with Steve Worsley narrating and I'll buy it again.

I was so looking forward to this new book and I'm so disappointed.
