About this listen

Family ties can be deadly

In the shadow of the Pentland Hills, a man has been callously struck down in front of his home. Tyre marks suggest it was no accidental hit-and-run. Somebody wanted him dead and as the man fights for every breath, they might still get their wish.

Grappling with the demons he thought he could leave behind after months away on enforced leave, D.S. Malkie McCulloch resists pressure from his superiors to pass the case on to the road policing unit, convinced that whoever was behind the wheel will be waiting for the chance to finish the job.

With the help of his partner DCI Steph Lang, Malkie uncovers evidence that leads him to a former soldier suffering with PTSD. Risking his already tarnished career – and his life – he must unpick a complex web of family ties, deception, and greed to reveal the secrets at the heart of the case. When the former soldier decides to take justice into his own hands, and a key witness reveals information that implicates somebody within the police, can Malkie piece together the truth before the body count soars?

The first in an utterly gripping new Scottish crime thriller series featuring DS Malkie McCulloch, a brilliantly complex detective who will risk everything to protect the innocent. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, JM Dalgliesh and JD Kirk.

At first I struggled with this story. I couldn't follow it and had to keep going back, but once I finally understood who was who (to many Mc's) I fell in love with it. Great side stories, family, friends, colleagues. I couldn't put it down. On fact I stayed up through the night to finish it yesterday. Loved Walter. Persevere and you will love it.

written as "tell" not "show" so it was a bit boring in places. saved by A King's narration which was excellent as usua

storyline was easy to follow.

I really enjoyed this. Great characters ... a sound protagonist and loyal sidekick. Really well written, great plot, and wonderfully read by Angus King. Well worth a listen.

A book with characters that hold so strong and real throughout with continuity essential to believing their personal story. The pasts haunting were portraid beautifuly given the ugly mess of PTSD.
This story line had me gripped from the beginning. Its not all about the past of course it was the unfolding events that had me hooked.
Beautiful narrative throughout.
A bonus for me, coincidentally I grew up around the area the book was set in, it was a surprise to be transported back while listening from some miles away.
The narrator on Audible was the perfect choice for this debut novel.
Looking forward to seeing where Doug Sinclairs takes us and how the relationship develop in his next book.
