Story
When a body is discovered, bled dry on a beach, the sleepy seaside town of Weston-super-Mare wakes up to a nightmare. For Detective Inspector Louise Blackwell, recently transferred to the town she last saw as a child, it’s her first case on the job. The victim - Veronica Lloyd, an elderly volunteer at a local church - has puncture wounds to her hands. When a priest is found killed in a nearby church in a similarly grisly condition, it becomes clear that Blackwell is dealing with a righteous and bloody murderer. But the victims aren’t random.

Cassie McDowell’s life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents’ strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she’s grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed - violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. Story
The FBI says it’s terrorism, but the whispers on the street tell a different story. They say a serial killer is stalking American women in Asia. Singapore CID assigns the case to Inspector Samuel Tay. Tay is something of a reluctant policeman. He’s a little overweight, a little lonely, a little cranky, and he smokes way too much. Thinking back, he can’t even remember why he became a police detective in the first place. But maybe none of that really matters, because he’s very, very good at what he does.

Summary
Their son is gone. Deep down, they think they’re to blame.
Summertime in Bleak Harbor means tourists, overpriced restaurants, and the Dragonfly Festival. One day before the much-awaited and equally chaotic celebration, Danny Peters, the youngest member of the family that founded the town five generations ago, disappears.
When Danny’s mother, Carey, and stepfather, Pete, receive a photo of their brilliant, autistic, and socially withdrawn son tied to a chair, they fear the worst. But there’s also more to the story. Someone is sending them ominous texts and emails filled with information no one else should have. Could the secrets they’ve kept hidden - even from one another - have led to Danny’s abduction?
As pressure from the kidnapper mounts, Carey and Pete must face their own ugly mistakes to find their son before he’s taken from them forever.

Slow, not believable, not for me...
I just could not get into this book. At 3 1/2 hours in I thought thought the story was picking up. At about 5 hours in I increased the play speed to 1.5x the normal speed. I stuck with it at this point since I was mildly curious how the story would be resolved. Once that happened I was wondering why I had continued. I found the conclusion preposterous given the characters involved. I will not spoil this for anyone but it is not on my recommended list. If you found this review helpful please indicate so. Thank You.

Gratuitous Filthy Language and Descriptions
The horrific language and filthy descriptions ruined what might otherwise have been a good storyline. I will never know for sure, because I couldn't get through even a third of the book. It was disgusting and left me feeling defiled. Sickening...just sickening.

Not so great
The plotline was great, but the way the police handled the situation was ridiculous. It ruined the whole story. When a child is kidnapped, you take the phone, laptop, etc immediately. You don't wait for the parents to bring it in the next day. You don't run around leaving the parents of the kid to run around by themselves also. Just no.

A layering of secrets!
What starts out as a simple story about a missing/kidnapped teen turns into a complicated layering of many people with many dark secrets. The story is well woven and entertaining. I am quite looking forward to more books from this author. The only weak spot was the narrator, I at first thought it was an electronic recitation of the story, but once you get into his mechanical flow, it is ok. I’d recommend reading this book yourself though to get the full enjoyment.
