Summary

Their son is gone. Deep down, they think they’re to blame.

Summertime in Bleak Harbor means tourists, overpriced restaurants, and the Dragonfly Festival. One day before the much-awaited and equally chaotic celebration, Danny Peters, the youngest member of the family that founded the town five generations ago, disappears.

When Danny’s mother, Carey, and stepfather, Pete, receive a photo of their brilliant, autistic, and socially withdrawn son tied to a chair, they fear the worst. But there’s also more to the story. Someone is sending them ominous texts and emails filled with information no one else should have. Could the secrets they’ve kept hidden - even from one another - have led to Danny’s abduction?

As pressure from the kidnapper mounts, Carey and Pete must face their own ugly mistakes to find their son before he’s taken from them forever.

Slow, not believable, not for me...

I just could not get into this book. At 3 1/2 hours in I thought thought the story was picking up. At about 5 hours in I increased the play speed to 1.5x the normal speed. I stuck with it at this point since I was mildly curious how the story would be resolved. Once that happened I was wondering why I had continued. I found the conclusion preposterous given the characters involved. I will not spoil this for anyone but it is not on my recommended list.

Meh

Tried hard to like this book, especially since it was a daily deal for $2. I listened for over 4 hours, but I never connected with any of the characters.
Narrator made me want to take a nap.

save your time!

Way too slow moving. I had to work at completing it and I'm not sure why I bothered.

I don't think so

This book had about 10 of the 53 chapters that were actually worth listening to. There were too many characters and side stories that interwove among the main plot, which was the death of a loved pet. Several situations were unbelievable and the book just droned on and on.

The narrator did a good job talking as men and women.

Very boring book.

I had a hard time getting through this book. I found it incredibly boring. Many of the ideas explored in this book could make a good story, but this one was not enjoyable. None of the characters were likeable and at no point did I really care what happened to them. Perhaps it's because I took long breaks when listening to this book, but I found there were too many characters to keep track of and some of them were easy to muddle up, especially the cops. The ending was convoluted and not at all satisfying. I would not recommend this book. There are plenty of good crime fiction novels out there to enjoy.

Too vulgar

Not even a minute in and an f-bomb is dropped with several more in the next 10 minutes. Not even 15 minutes in and had to stop. Will be getting a refund.

Gratuitous Filthy Language and Descriptions

The horrific language and filthy descriptions ruined what might otherwise have been a good storyline. I will never know for sure, because I couldn't get through even a third of the book. It was disgusting and left me feeling defiled. Sickening...just sickening.

Not so great

The plotline was great, but the way the police handled the situation was ridiculous. It ruined the whole story. When a child is kidnapped, you take the phone, laptop, etc immediately. You don't wait for the parents to bring it in the next day. You don't run around leaving the parents of the kid to run around by themselves also. Just no.
