Story
The first interstellar war, a generation ago, left humanity enslaved. Now humans fight in the armies of their masters to save themselves from annihilation. At least, that's what the propaganda insists is true. What the layers of lies keep hidden is how badly the new war is going for the people of earth. Now it's Dylan Kane's turn to blast into the heavens and join the battle, but what his masters don't know is that by putting a weapon in his hands, they're giving him the key to unlocking his hopes of freedom.

great idea but not a good read
I loved the idea and the story had potential but considering it was set in the future I could not get past the 18th century approach to class and sexism. did not help that that voices felt like how Americans believe we speak.

decent science fiction ruined by performance
the story, albeit not very original and a bit unnecessarily based on "old British" society of the days of the British Empire, is pretty entertaining. but the whole experience is ruined by the narrator - maybe it is me, but I could not listen to the guy. it is completely over the top in parts and in parts it's just bad acting.

Well written, excellent narration, superb omnibus
This was my introduction to Michael Wallace’s books – Kindle and Audible versions. For me, the storylines are well written and I enjoyed the action, suspense, humour and the bit of romance that they include. Steve Barnes provides excellent narration for the Audible version and produces a good selection of different voices that clearly identify the various characters. The combination of the descriptive writing and the wonderful narration make the characters and events very vivid so that you can believe you are right there (the same way you can become immersed in watching a film). Not only does the Blackbeard Superbox contain books 1-4 of the Starship Blackbeard series but as a bonus the Sentinel Trilogy books are included. I definitely liked that fact that the Superbox is an omnibus of two consecutive series of books so that I could immediately read/listen to one book after another and didn’t feel that I’d been left with any cliff hangers.

Well worth a Token!
This is classic bread and butter Sci Fi. Well worth the token for the set. it's not going to blow your mind with unreal futuristic concepts but it will scratch a certain space faring itch. it's a essentially 18th century sea faring in space. A special mention to the narration as you quickly forget your actually listening to a single actor.

the worst narration and story ever
A good narrator can turn a bad book into something palatable. An exceptional narrator is golden. unfortunately this narration is so abismal i would rather enjoy being hit in the face with a bluebottle ( big bug for those in usa) whilst riding my harley wearing an open faced helmet whilst negotiating a hare pin bend on gravel.
even for 1 credit 45 hours of my life is worth more, like say props pig on repeat would be better time consuming. that said it is not all the narrators fault, the story is pants. now i will caveat that with the fact that i only managed a few hours of this bilge before linda blair exorcist vomiting in an attempt to rid myself from it.
now if you want to see what i consider good narration look at rcbray with two diff authors, the expeditionary force series (authors craig alanson) and the mountain man series (author keith blackmore). two completely different genre
for another exceptional narrator look at mark boyett or from the expanse series jefferson mays

About 60% before I gave up
This is probably only the second series or novel I'll never finish.
it has good moments, but it suffers from "if it can go wrong for the protagonist it will every time predictably"
it just got very tiring, add in the predictable dialog

Space Opera at it’s finest
This book is space opera, not science-fiction. If you enjoy a ship that can u-turn in space and maintain its velocity; a space navy that has wormhole jump capability but still uses cannon firing metal shot; technology that works hard to approach 0.1 light speed but just cannot quite seem to move any faster, and; ships with engines that “sputter“ when damaged - then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you demand at least a passing observance of proper physics by an author who builds a credible navy in his story - then put this work back on the shelf and keep looking.

An outstanding value for an entertaining ride
1st off, Steve Barnes does an outstanding job with the voices of a large cast of characters.
As for Mr. Wallace, he manages to take you into deep space where you feel all the bumps, gravity loss, battle jitters, disorienting jumps and blood curling screams. What a ride! So what if the royal navy sounds very much like the Brits’s? Much of old Britain history is thinly disguised but really, humans never learn and will repeat the same mistakes on Earth or in space, so to me that was acceptable.
While Michael W. does not borrow from Star Trek, in some ways, the dialogue and some situations reminded me of some funny ST episodes. This bit of levity was welcome to relieve some of the tense situations.
The character development is good. I got very fond of Tolvern and Kapp. The series is well written with no foul language and clear sentences.
I will be buying the next audio compilation in this series Star Wolf superbox when it becomes available.
