About this listen

A Black Notice means one thing: unidentified human remains. This time, five skeletons buried deep in the fenland soil.

Rowan Jackman and Marie Evans are the detectives who take on the toughest cases on the Lincolnshire fens. This time trouble comes in threes.

6 a.m. on a dark autumn morning. Retired detective Bob Ruston is about to feed the dog when the doorbell rings. The man on the doorstep has blood running down his cheek and a look of terror on his face. 'Please! Let me in! They're going to kill me!'

Bob sees a handcuff dangling from the man's lacerated wrist.

Later that day, a stylishly dressed woman marches into Saltern-le-Fen police station demanding to see Detective Marie Evans. 'I want you to find my husband.'

Then a homeowner clearing undergrowth in his back garden makes a horrifying discovery. The decomposing remains of five bodies huddled in an old World War 2 pillbox.

Detective Jackman asks Interpol to issue a Black Notice. But little is he prepared for the shocking results that come in . . .

I love this series, and the narrator. If you want a complicated but reasonably plausible story, a group of dedicated police officers, and side stories about their personal lives, then this series is for you. The narration is excellent as always. What’s more there’s a tv series being made with Mr Armitage playing Jackman. Can’t wait!

Another triumph

Another series of cases for Jackman, Evans and team. It is always good how nearby forces (in Cartwright’s other series) get a mention too. Well worth listening to

Jackman to the rescue again!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was longer than her usual ones in previous series.
Good plot that all came together in the end with usual twists and turns.
Hopefully this is not the end of Jackman and Marie.

Great narrator and good story line

Despite the darkness of the subjects Joy Ellis writes about, her characters, the uniqueness of the Fens and those who live there, make all her books somehow uplifting. For me, interesting escapism.

The caring and kindness of all the folk in the station. Sometimes bordering on unbelievable in this day and age.

Loved this book & have read all of the series & they just get better, excellent writing & blending of 3 cases together, I didn’t want it to finish, Armitage is an excellent narrator who makes story even better!
