About this listen

France’s Périgord region is the home of the black truffle and at five thousand euros a kilo, the exquisite ‘Black Diamond’ is a treasured local asset. When reports come in that this unique delicacy is being adulterated with a cheaper Chinese version, Captain Bruno Courrèges is asked to investigate the scam. But matters take a much darker turn when a horrific murder occurs, and Bruno has his work cut out to find the connection between present crimes and long-buried ones that are linked to France’s colonial past.

I loved this book, it's not the type of book I usually read but I am glad I,

Fantastic vook

Pleasingly gentle detective fiction (aside from a few very short gruesome bits). The writing isn’t great but the story line is well crafted and so are the personalities — which are the main focus of the drama. Bill Wallis is a master at his craft. Good stuff.

On the whole a good read

It's probably impossible to write an authentic or convincing story about someone else's country - I've lived in England half my life, but couldn't claim to understand how it works! Still, if you regard Martin Walker's books as science-fiction of a sort, they are intriguing and well plotted, full of twists and turns, good fantasy.

Good suspense story

Third book and again I really appreciated the twists in the book that kept twists in the story even though you had inklings of what would be found out next.
The previous stories had set up Bruno's love interests well so there was a wealth of backing information to call on to develop even further.
The narration is good and Bill Wallis's voice suits Bruno's character.. I always enjoy series books better when the books are narrated by the same person unless it is needs to be someone different to add to a different perspective by a character or a similar reason that adds to the story or plot.

Looking forward to the next. I hope you are enjoying these as much as me.

I really enjoyed this one.

I am enjoying this series and this book in particular, although attitudes are a little dated.
I really struggle with the characterisation of Bruno. Our hero sounds like an old man , not a young police officer who is an action man , who charms the ladies.

The setting is the star
