Story
We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Modern light-hearted take on Chandler
Addictive and very hard to break away from even for a day. The plot is mostly gripping and rather tight, maybe with the exception of the fourth instalment, which does seem slightly over the top. Despite that, it is probably the funniest part in the series. The characters are interesting and produce plenty of humour and very nice interactions. The narrator is probably at his finest in trying to breathe life in all of the different characters. A must for fans of the genre.

A four book bundle is worth a credit...
The stories themselves are just about ok but the sarcastic banter is superb and quite true to life...
If that floats your boat then definitely purchase them...
R.C.BRAY makes the whole series well worth a listen and he deserves his penthouse, yought and Ferrari...
Very easy listening and uncomplicated...

Fantastic books, Brilliant Narration.
These books are really amazing, so much description (without being flowery) so much personality and plenty of humour...
I have totally enjoyed listening to these vivid stories, each with its own twist. The books present you with recurring characters which help build the atmosphere and environment.
The investigations are intriguing, fun and generally pleasing to listen to.
I cannot rate these books enough!
The 4 book Black bundle, was read brilliantly by R. C. Bray, what a narrator! He reads these to perfection, with charm and personality.
I felt like I was in the midst of a P.I adventures; as his voice took me there. Seriously though R. C. Bray is magnificent a true joy to listen to. Pairing this book to this narrator was sheer genius.
Enjoy these books, although I am sure you will, as seriously They are NOT to be missed!!

Boy, What a Bargain
I came across this 4-Book bundle entirely because R.C . Bray is my favorite narrator. But this series is unlike anything else of his that I’ve downloaded. Bray is first and foremost a Avi-for guy. Hell, I rarely even read Bray books before buying The Martian (a Bray masterpiece). I’ve since listened to dozens of Bray-read books. My library now boasts more Bray books than any other author or reader. Yeah, I like his work.
There is nothing sci-if about the Black books. Black is a fascinating LA private detective who teeters on the edge of financial ruin. These are set in current time, but author Russell Black gives the books noir quality that sets them apart from most other private eye books.
And parts of the stories are an out and out hoot! I never tire of his sole employee/office assistant Roxy. She’s a very funny smart-ass!

Cliched to the limit! Deliciously hilarious.
This uproarious detective four-book detective series is a hoot! Between Detective Black's secretary, the screamingly funny Roxie with her office 🐱 Mugsie, a stray overweight feline, and Black's own lively sarcastic barbs, I laughed out loud throughout. "Our bank account is about as empty as a Kardashian's head." We follow Black as he conducts his investigations and meet some interesting and very quirky characters, making this a must-listen. Narration is by one of my favorites, R.C. Bray. Russell Blake, you've given us hours of delightful entertainment and I 👀 forward to many more in this series. Well worth the credit. So highly recommended, I can't see the top! NOTE: There was a minor Audible problem on my Amazon devices. When I would took a break, it lost the correct bookmark. I've had a similar problem in Audible box sets. Still, this four-book bundle was worth searching for where I left off.

Highly Recommend This Series
The books were good, narrator was great, as usual his range of voices is amazing, you never have to struggle with trying to figure out who is supposed to be talking. RC Bray, in my opinion, is the best in the business.
The humor in the books is literally laugh out loud funny. The author does a terrific job balancing serious and humor. Real life is neither all funny or all serious, many authors do one or the other, I always admire authors who do both.
There were a few errors in book four I feel the editor should have caught. It didn't make any difference to the storyline, it just surprised me that it wasn't noticed. I'm curious to know if it was in the written version and if any others noticed it.
I have to warn people that once you start listening you will not want to stop.

Written with the style of detective novels of the past. Sex scenes fade out …. Vulgarity is 'G' rated Violence is kept to a minimum, allowing our imaginations to 'visual' the scene. This is a real page turner with unexpected plot turns and twists. Who would think that "vintage detective film noir" would work in modern day L.A. complete with sassy repertoire and all.
