About this listen

For a family trying to make an isolated farmhouse into a home, fear and rage are getting harder to control in a primal short story by the New York Times bestselling author of Whisper Network and Cutting Teeth.

The Strauss family is on knife’s edge. Sam is a resentful stay-at-home dad. Rachel feels the restlessness in her blood returning. Their children are getting out of hand. And a recent mudslide has forced the wolves out of the woods to look for food. As dusk falls and tensions rise, the family must come together to survive the night—from the threats outside and those within.

Chandler Baker’s Big Bad is part of Creature Feature, a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind. They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting.

Enjoyed this. It was more tense than I expected. Generally an enjoyable listen overall and the narrator did well with the different characters.

How do you tell an original story about something that’s been covered a million times before?

Well, in this case, the writer makes it real.

Baker does an amazing job of making every character in this short story layered, believable and in some way relatable.

The story unfolds gradually, but with a constant sinister undercurrent. We know what to expect from the cover/title, so we are teased with it throughout, all leading up to a tense climax and welcome twists.

This is simple story, told well.

An original and engaging take on the well-trodden werewolf story

Mums a werewolf for five seconds so that's apparently scary, the kids are shockingly annoying and the dad is pathetic. There's been more bad than good with these creature feature collection and this is possibly the worst.

The weak narration made it worse.

Complete fail.

frustratingly bad.
