About this listen

The world is dark, silent except for the crackling of flames that consume the remains of what was once Chicago.

When I first read about this book, I was interested in the simple twist it had on a zombie post-apocalyptic novel by focusing on the time period after the zombies have mostly been killed off.

However, I don't think that the author quite manage to make this premise interesting enough to sustain the novel fully and indeed switched the focus onto a love triangle that really didn't grab my attention. I think that most people are too used to the world in post-apocalyptic novels generally being so difficult to survive in that things just seemed a little too easy for the main characters in this book, particularly the convenience of finding particular people at various stages of the story.

I am not familiar with the narrator of this book, but found her performance to be a strong one that improved my overall impression of the book, her voices for the supporting cast were distinct enough without being too obtrusive and her voice of the main character was an enjoyable one.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and the narration of it, but was a little disappointed in the eventual focus of it.

Interesting premise that didn't quite work
