About this listen

Beyond the Aquila Rift: It's shorthand for the trip no one ever hopes to make by accident. The one that will screw up the rest of your life, the one that creates the ghosts you see haunting the shadows of company bars across the whole Bubble. Men and women ripped out of time, cut adrift from families and lovers by an accident of an alien technology we use but rarely comprehend.©2005 Alastair Reynolds (P)2019 ABP Editore Anthologies & Short Stories Science Fiction Space Opera Fiction Artificial Intelligence Robotics Technology Computer Science

Audio quality is not good. sounds metallic and too sharp. It took some getting used too.

I also think the reader was a bit fast.

Story was great as expected

Great story but low audio quality

I downloaded this book after having watched the Love, Death and Robots episode inspired by it. It's an excellent story, though, part of me wishes that I'd heard it before watching the episode, as is always the case.

One slight problem I had with this audiobook was the reading pace. There's a lot to take in in a pretty small amount of time and I think the author read too quickly and it didn't really give you a chance to dwell on what was happening. My solution to this was to change it to 80% speed, though, and that seemed to do the trick.

I listened to this whilst on a walk and it firmly held my attention throughout. Highly recommend particularly if you've *not* seen the Love, Death and Robots episode yet.

Great story

great great story, not as good as reading it but all the same it’s great narrative sounds a little muffled and tinny

Great Story, Odd Sounding

The good things first - it’s a fantastic short story by A. Reynolds. I really enjoyed his revelation space books so I was a little reluctant to get into this one. However, it did not disappoint. Excellent buildup and Reynolds-style twists.

Now the bad things - the narrator can’t control his breathing. You can hear him gasping for air between sentences which can be pretty disruptive anxiety inducing. His pacing was also off somehow. I tried to listen at different speeds but it didn’t help. It’s not the worst narration I heard but it’s still the auditory equivalent of nails being scratched down a chalkboard.

Great story, awful narration

I loved the existential dread it caused, and how the story unfolds.

This brought more depth to the Love, Death, & Robots episode of the same name

Great scifi short story
