Summary

"An irresistible queer romance." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

It’s not long before their pet-centric arrangement sparks a person-centric desire....

Simon Burke has always preferred animals to people. When the countdown to adopting his own dog is unexpectedly put on hold, Simon turns to the PetShare app to find the fluffy TLC he’s been missing. Meeting a grumpy children’s book illustrator who needs a dog walker isn’t easy for the man whose persistent anxiety has colored his whole life, but Jack Matheson’s menagerie is just what Simon needs.

Four dogs, three cats and counting. Jack’s pack of rescue pets is the only company he needs. But when a bad fall leaves him with a broken leg, Jack is forced to admit he needs help. That the help comes in the form of the most beautiful man he’s ever seen is a complicated, glorious surprise.

Being with Jack - talking, walking, making out - is a game changer for Simon. And Simon’s company certainly…eases the pain of recovery for Jack. But making a real relationship work once Jack’s cast comes off will mean compromise, understanding and lots of love.

Nothing wrong

Nothing happend and every problem just resolved itself. Rather boring, no mystery nor conflict. Narrator was great.

An enjoyable hurt/comfort romance

An enjoyable hurt/comfort romance between two characters very much in need of the loving support of a partner.

Both Jack and Simon’s personalities and situations tug on the heart strings and when they finally start to open up to each other it is delightful. They share some steamy scenes as the book progresses. Jack’s brother and Simon’s grandma also contribute to the enjoyment of the story.

I must admit it took me a while to get into the story. In fact, I switched to the audio version, which hooked me right away. It is superbly narrated by James Cavenaugh.

Heartwarming story with relatable anxiety ♥

One of the things I enjoy most about Roan Parrish's books are the difficulties that some MCs go through, how they learn to manage them to live with the. This was no exception. Coming from someone who suffers social anxiety, parts of one of the MCs mind was completely in sync with my thoughts and it made the story that much sweeter and relatable to me. The story felt smooth, the romance was organic and not forced, it's definitely one of the sweetest books I've ever read. I enjoyed it SOOOOO much! and I would recommend it on that alone buuuuut the narration was just as wonderful. James Cavenaugh's voice was soothing and conveyed the MCs feelings so clearly which is always a HUUUUUGE reason why I prefer audiobooks.

If you get this book, you won't regret it!

PS: I have almost as many pets as they mention in the book, which was a plus! (5 dogs, 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs lol)

Gentle Understanding

I love the fact that things aren't magically better by just being together. Both men still have their issues to deal with. The real work of understanding happens after Jack's cast is off. Both men have to work together.

tender and kind

This book was a balm. Soothing and sweet and it should such a depth of knowledge of anxiety. The care these characters took with eachother is a reminder of how lovely people can be. I look forward to more from the author.

Love the real characters

Roan Parrish always has the best characters, often they are a little damaged, but just so darn lovable. This books is no different as they feel their way past their challenges to their happily ever after. James Cavenaugh did a great job with the narration. I could listen to this one all day, in fact I did, I was enjoying it so much. This book was great.

Why did I wait?

I saw this book, like the author, and like dogs. I don’t know why I didn’t snatch it up immediately other than I thought it might be too mopey. I did not find it too mopey. The difficulties faced by Simon & Jack were tough but not hopeless. The emotions were conveyed as complex and adult and healing and the whole thing was lovely. There’s even a minor “easter egg” tie in with another series.

I liked how the pets were woven in. Each was a specific character, not just dog & cat. They were included in the scenes when they were in the room, as they should be (but doesn’t always happen). And while being generally well behaved, they did scuffle sometimes for verisimilitude. At this moment, as someone with pet allergies, my only quibble is that grandma probably will have to host future joint meals instead of the guys inviting her over. I liked how, early on, Simon was careful not to hug her in the dog walking clothes.

Steam: Med-hot. Steamy M/M sexytimes occur on page, with enthusiastic positivity. (They kick the pets out until after, if you’re curious.)

Narration: Pleasant listening experience. Hope this narrator does the next in series which I will buy right after posting this review.

Simon and Jack, Sweeter than Honey!

I love, love the dynamic here - of course i'm always for the underdog - it's a soft spot. That said, it's hard to do this well. Roan Does Just this, this book is a 6 Star plus in written form - and I just got the Audio Book - brilliant narration by James Cavanaugh, he brings this up to a higher plane- I'm definitely going to follow up with any books he might narrate. He brings Simon and Jack to life - it is so beautiful, really beautiful. Please Roan use him again. Looking so forward to Best Laid Plans coming in February! - Charlie's story! Roan you have alot to live up to in Better than People. I can't wait for Charlie to be happy - and I can't wait to have (hopefully) more of Simon and Jack and Simon's Grandma! Excellent, excellent writing - I am a very prolific reader - and I've read this - and am listening to it for the second time on audible! Thank you!

So Amazing!

No one conveys intimacy in a steamy scene better than Roan Parish. 🔥 🔥 🔥 And James Cavanaugh's voice for Jack, so hot! This is a lovely tale of two people who needed to find each other. Cannot wait for the next installment!
