About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Read by award-winning narrator Jeff Harding.

**NOW A MAJOR PRIME TV SERIES STARRING ALAN RITCHSON**

Reacher never backs down from a problem.

And he's about to find a big one, on a deserted Arizona road, where a Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. Under the merciless desert sun, nothing is as it seems.

Minutes later Reacher is heading into the nearby border town, a backwater that has seen better days. Next to him is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent, who is trying to find her twin brother. He might have got mixed up with some dangerous people.

And Reacher might just need to pay them a visit.

Their leader has burrowed his influence deep into the town. Just to get in and meet the mysterious Dendoncker, Reacher is going to have to achieve the impossible.

To get answers will be even harder. There are people in this hostile, empty place who would rather die than reveal their secrets.

But then, if Reacher is coming after you, you might be better off dead.

Although the Jack Reacher novels can be listened to in any order, Better Off Dead is the 26th ausiobook in the internationally popular series.

‘Jeff Harding’s [...] narration captures Reacher’s character perfectly [...] you have to savour every minute.’ The Sunday Times

Critic reviews

Classic Reacher, great story. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
Thoroughly entertaining . . . it's good to have some of Reacher's brutal certainties back.
The one man revenge machine seems revitalised. Great stuff.
The coolest continuing series character.
Jack Reacher is today's James Bond, a thriller hero we can't get enough of.
Everyone needs to kick some butt sometimes, even if it's just imaginary.
The Child brothers' superb second collaboration . . . Smart writing, vivid action scenes, and dramatic twists mark this seamless effort. Even those for whom this is their first Reacher novel will be clamouring for more.

I love the jack reacher books. I read most of the books but have listened to the last couple on audible. The story on this book is a mixture of many other reacher stories and the narrative is dull and slow. I found myself not really bothered about what was going to happen as I knew that reacher would win in the end with no real problems. Whilst that is why we love the character as he is the hardest man alive, it’s all becoming very predictable. I would strongly suggest changing the narrator for the next book, and maybe making reacher a little more human. The book was ok but certainly not the best reacher story. Felt a bit like just going through the motions.

Lazy writing and outdated narration

Lacked the twists found in Childs earlier work. Seems a case of just getting something on the shelves before each Christmas. I enjoy reading the series, but definitely not his best work.

Fairly typical Reacher

Another great story form Lee and Andrew Child with excellent story telling from Jeff Harding

Jeff Harding is the best Reacher on audio and he doesn't disappoint in this intriguing and action- packed latest novel in the series. There is little that would indicate that this is co-written and it rattles along as Reacher finds himself acting as a hero to yet another damsel in distress. Small town America is a dangerous place to be, if this is anything to go by, but the bad guys get theirs as the major kicks ass repeatedly. Entertaining, clever and fast moving. Well worth listening to.

Another great novel from the Reacher catalogue

Best Reacher yet!! Loved the story. Believable and so so entertaining! I’m a fan of the new collab writing and Reacher just keep getting better and better. Love how he’s being dragged into the 21st century with mobile phones! Great read and Jeff Harding IS Reacher!
