Summary
Im dritten Teil des großen Fortsetzungsromans erscheinen zwei reale historische Personen auf der Bühne: Benito Juarez (1806-1872), Präsident und Neubegründer Mexikos, der bereits im vorigen Teil einen kurzen Auftritt hatte, rückt hier mehr und mehr in den Vordergrund. Der erbitterte Kampf zwischen ihm und seinem Gegenspieler Kaiser Maximilian (1832-1867), einer politischen Marionette Napoleons, hat begonnen. Mitten hinein in diese Auseinandersetzung geraten nun die Helden aus der Fantasiewelt des Erzählers, deren Geschicke mit denen der geschichtlichen Gestalten eng verwoben werden.
