About this listen

Shadows scream, whispers torment, and wishes curse.

The empire of Eisa once stood as a symbol of hope for purging the wicked magic that had plagued its lands. But when Wielders are spotted within those borders, the sanctity that once acted as an unshakable foundation crumbles beneath Sorrel Zdraevit's feet.

With the resurgence of Wielders on Eisan soil, protests are increasing in the streets, citizens are suffering, and everywhere she turns tragedy fractures the facade of peace that had sheltered her.

As the second eldest princess in Eisa's imperial family, when war is brought to the kingdom's door, Sorrel is forced to step into a new role, leading her deeper and deeper into the world she fears most. Desperate to protect her country against dark and twisted magic, and heal those around her, she must decide what it is she stands for when the world as she knows is rendered senseless.

Unsure of whom to condemn, and whom to put her faith in, Sorrel is faced with tainted realities that threaten to destroy everything she's ever held dear. All that matters is keeping her kingdom and family safe against the monsters infiltrating her country. Secrets and lies drag her into the depths of her worst nightmare, where fighting through the calamities is the only way she will have any hope of making it out alive—if she can hold on to her own will to live.

I can’t express just how much I loved this audiobook. Loosely based, I think, on the history of the Romanovs and Rasputin, but set in a fantasy setting. The characters were believable, the sister’s relationship was reminiscent of the March sisters in Little Women. The narration was spot on for the style of story. Loved every minute of it. Wish book 2 was already available.

This is a character driven story of war, magic wielders, power, betrayal, family bonds and self-discovery. The story follows Sorrel Zdraevit and the royal Imperial family of the Kingdom of Eisa after their world is torn apart after a resurgence of wielders attacks, protests, war, violence and assassination attacks from anarchy groups.

The story is written from princess Sorrel’s POV, the second eldest daughter who is young, headstrong and determined.

Sorrel’s family moments with her sister’s Inessa, Yulia and Kira and family childhood friend Roland reminded me of the tender, heartwarming family scenes in “Little Women”. I loved the heartwarming scene of Kira’s birthday sunrise morning ritual with her sisters watching the beautiful colours of the sunrise together.

The story touches on the themes & motives of war, suffering and outcomes of war and violence and Sorrel is questioning her own divine faith, beliefs and moral views on good and evil, and she starts to realise everything she has been told to believe all her life was possibly misguided.

I was hooked from the first chapter and captivated by the characters Sorrel and Inessa and drawn into their journeys and the world building was beautifully written.

The ending was fast- paced, engaging, emotional with lots of plot twists & I was not expecting that ending, what a cliffhanger!

I really enjoyed the audiobook and liked the quality, voice and tone of the voice narrator and she did a fantastic job conveying emotions of all of the characters especially Sorrel and bringing the story to life. Overall, a fantastic audiobook and I highly recommend it. I can’t wait for Book 2.
