About this listen

From the halls of Merry Hall to the jungles of Borneo, Bend with the Wind follows a family bound by legacy—and tested by the tides of history they cannot escape.

The Beaumonts have weathered centuries of triumph and tragedy, but by the twentieth century, their stately home teeters on the edge of ruin. Sir Thomas returns from India determined to restore the family fortune, while his four sons each chase a destiny that will take them across continents, into danger, desire, and war.

Henry clings to tradition at Merry Hall. Reggie risks everything in the glittering world of international finance. Tug pursues love and adventure in the colonies. Geoffrey confronts the brutal realities of battle and espionage. Loyalties will fracture, hearts will break, and fortunes will rise—or vanish—at the mercy of ambition and history.

As the Second World War tears the world apart, the Beaumonts must learn to bend with the wind—or risk breaking forever. One question hangs over them: who will endure, who will triumph, and what will remain when the storms finally pass?

Across continents, across generations, the tides of empire shape all they touch.

I like a good family saga but this was spoiled for me by explicit descriptions of torture in the scenes concerning life in the 2nd world war. I'm not easily shocked, the raunchy sections, though clearly written by a man, were well enough done, but I wish I hadn't read about the cruelty to women imprisoned in the far east. I've read other books by the author which were less upsetting but I wouldn't recommend this one or continue with the saga.

gratuitous descriptions of cruelty
