Kindness is still out there

This short story starts with an act of kindness, soon turns to a woman fighting with a traumatic past, but is dealing, finding happiness and a love attraction, but then turns suspenseful with twists turns and a dramatic ending.
Riley Raye narrated this story and did a nice job with the storyline.

A LOT of Secrets.....

Here in "Because I Won't," there was a lot of mystery, suspense, thriller, HOT sex, and SECRETS.
And if that wasn't enough to spook you, there was a stalker that lied and waited for his victim....

Elaine Marie really went dark in book 2. Just when you thought you had it figured out, you were wrong. She did some incredible work, I can't imagine what book 3 will be like.

This was my 1st time hearing Riley Raye narrator but she didn't disappoint. I most definitely recommend "Because I Won't" to others.

Good story about getting strong after trauma

Jo was abused by her boyfriend and finally found the strength to leave him. She was saved by Jake and Carly (who are awesome) and she grows strong and independent with time. This was a story about getting stronger even in the face of adversity and I loved to see her grow (though there were moments of irrational behavior but I do think that’s normal for someone who suffered from such a trauma). There were some inconsistencies to the story, such as the number of years that passed. While there is a romance in this story, it is secondary compared to her growth. (the romantic interest, James, is the brother of Nick, from the first book; Jenna and Nick are also in this story)

Riley Raye, the narrator is ok- she needs a slightly better range for her voices because there were some times I didn’t know who was speaking (and Jake’s “voice” was way too feminine.) But she did a good job telling the story with emotion.

Full of suspense and twists!

This is a fairly short audiobook but it is crammed full of story! This story follows Jo and her heartbreaking story of abuse, it also brings in James who is Nick's brother from the first series so it was nice to hear a bit about Jenna and his future after the first story in the series. Elaine wrote this story with great sensitivity and I loved that we saw how Jo brought herself together and became stronger after what happened to her. There was some hot romance and an amazing twist at the end, I love the way Elaine ends her stories with surprises you would never expect! Riley did a great job of narrating this story, bringing all the emotions of Jo throughout.

angst...

This was quite different for me, but engrossing all the same. A definite must listen to. Elaine Marie's writing has depth and just grabs your attention. This was my first book my Riley Raye. All in all, it is not for the faint of heart, but a great story none the less.

A Second Chance at Life and Love

This can be read as a standalone even though it is in a trilogy. Actually, it took me a little bit to realize how Because I Can and Because I Won't were connected. I love stories like these where the main female character is such a strong individual. Because I Won't is a story about overcoming one's past but also a story about discovering love. There are some VERY unexpected twists in this shorter listen that make it super engaging. This author may not write longer stories (yet🤞), but she is able to make these shorter stories pack a punch.

I thought the narrator did a great job in this performance and her voice fit Jo very well. She kept character voices consistent and did a fabulous job bringing out Jo's strength as a female main character.

I received a review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Abused Heroine Remakes Herself, Finds Friends/Love

Because I Won't is the second (though last so far) in The Because Trilogy. It can be enjoyed as a stand-alone book but includes characters from book one (Because I Can) as secondary characters. Well done audio performance by Riley Raye in an emotional and sometimes tough to read story. Triggers for abuse, rape and kidnapping.

Joelle (Jo) escapes Nathan who was abusive. She flees three states to start over. Jake and Carly adopt her and help her with a job, an affordable apartment and to get back in her feet. Over time she takes self-defense classes and returns to her college studies. James (who Jo teasingly calls Jimmy) is a local Private Investigator who dines where Jo waits tables regularly. They go from friends to flirting to more as Jo comes out of her shell. Just when life seems to be going right, things take an ugly twist. Find out if Jo is strong enough to stand up for herself now and what a difference friends and love can make in your life.

My Two Pennies

4.5 I listened to the audiobook of this story and although I’m reading them in order they can be standalone’s in a series. Narration wise once again I wasn’t too thrilled with the characters expressiveness but the storyline is what kept me wanting to continue further. When I realize exactly how the stories interconnect I was like WHATTT?! Loved how the author did that, I was excited knowing the background of the now secondary characters in this particular book made their presence. The story itself is inspiring, we’re seeing a woman fight and stand up for herself and it’s empowering. The twist and turns keep us, the readers on our toes and will leave your jaw slack when secrets are revealed. I will be looking into book three in the near future.

Some suspense and romance

Narrator is better than the one for the first book. More emotion and a better pace. Her guy voice needs work, but overall a good listen.

I loved that Jo shows strength; she went through some really dark stuff, and she’s fighting to have a good life. I didn’t like her attitude though; felt like she was mean at times and threw tantrums. Didn’t like that she had one night stands with randoms and seemed to have an issue with drinking. She did live through something brutal, so I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but it was tough. Also, I don’t like she withholds important information. The whole Donna situation was just weird; why wouldn’t Jo try to warn her? Jo acted too blasé with that situation; it seemed stupid. There’s interesting elements to the story and it is entertaining. There’s a few twists; one I really didn’t like, it felt like people who were supposed to be helping Jo, took advantage of a distraught woman that wasn’t exactly in the right frame of mind. Towards the end was a bit of a jumble. The writing is fairly basic, but it’s okay. Liked the other twists and the suspense added some entertainment. The romance had some sweet parts with a bit of steam. Overall, I think I just didn’t connect with Jo and her choices, so the story ended up not being my type of thing.

People can be so twisted!

This is another good story from Elaine Marie. It’s the second in the Because Trilogy. I read book one and that just Floored me. I was looking for that same reaction in this one. I didn’t have it. This is still a gut wrenching story but it seemed to be missing something to give it that extra zing. The characters are nicely done but I didn’t really *feel* with them. The story kept my interest and I was surprised at the turn of events.

Jake and Carly were super people. They saw a need and helped a girl out. Then instead of moving on the girl stayed. They all became friends including a restaurant regular James. Then trouble comes a knocking.

I listened to this on audio and Riley Raye did a good job. My only issue is I wish she would use a lower voice for the men. Later in the book there is some quick action happening and different characters were talking. I was confused a time or two because i missed the announcement of who was talking.

Short and sweet

Another great book from Elaine Marie. Lots of twists and turns, Kept my attention from word one. New narrator to !e and she did a.great job. Her male voices need some development, but they weren't unlistenable.

a traumatic past makes you stronger

book 2 was better
strong story line and I liked how even though it was separate it incorporated book 1 into it.
twists and turns were good.
narration was better in this book even though Jake sounds like a little old lady instead of a guy.
steamy scenes are read way better and I enjoyed book 2 more.

A Dark Romance - hard to listen to

The author, Elaine Marie, is not afraid to tackle the hard topics. This story has elements of rape, kidnapping and some other taboo subjects. She was very brave to write about it. As a victim of rape, it was a little hard for me to listen to, though.

I could not give the full five stars because the story was hard to follow in some parts. For example, in chapters two, three and four, they start out “One year later,” “Two years later,” and “Three years later,” respectively. I thought by chapter four we were six years into the future from the beginning. Instead, the author means that each chapter is based on a flash forward from chapter one.

The narrator was a vast improvement from the first book of the series. Ms. Raye gave a great performance for the most part. She is able to impart the emotions of the characters to the reader. My only critique would be Jake’s voice had too high of a register for a man. He was even higher than the voice of Jo, the heroine of the story. Ms. Raye gave James/Jimmy a great manly tone, so I know she has it within her abilities. 😉
