Summary

Max was a professional soldier, and extremely good at his job. Right up until it killed him.

At the moment of his death, he meets Hildi the Valkyrie, and is given three options. Serve Odin in Valhalla as one of the Einherjar, fighting each day and celebrating each night until the battle of Ragnarok. Accept his death as final, and end his existence. Or be reincarnated as a Battleborne on a random unknown world.

Max chooses to gamble! To live a new life, whatever that might entail. Favored with a blessing of the Valkyries, who gift him with an unusual bloodline, he is reborn on a world of magic and monsters. In fact, his own new body is half monster!

Thrust into the world with nothing but a canvas diaper, sharp teeth, and claws, Max must use his skills as a soldier to improvise and survive. There are no respawns, and at level zero, nearly everything can kill him.

With his new status as one of the Battleborne, much is expected of Max. Dangerous and difficult quests are presented to him, and the loot ranges from filthy goblin loincloths to epic weapons!

Join Max as he learns to navigate his new life, struggling with the instincts of his monster bloodlines, and taking advantage of them at the same time.

Great start to a LitRpg story

loved this book, it was a fantastic start to a LitRPG, the main character is likeable and earns all he gets throughout the book. Unlike other stories where they get OP from one thing. Just an all round great story and great characters.

Good litrpg book.

Pretty good story with interesting plot. Good narration. Its fun and fast. Has action, magic and some romance. Would like a bit more character developement and integrations between them and a bit less kingdom building.

Up to Dave Willmarth's usual standard

Another great story from the mind of Dave Willmarth, full of his great humour and fantastic characters with a cool nod to Norse mythology. Really good gamelit, but not too many stat sheets. Oh and there is action, lots of action. The performance by the narrators is very good.

Great book.. 5*

Really enjoyed this book. The narration and character voices was first class. I enjoy LitRPG books but I find most of them are just bogged down with never ending player stats and was hoping to find a writer who concentrated more on the story line. Well I have found one now. 95% story 5% stats. The story line is easy to follow and there is enough battles and fights to keep you hooked. My only criticism is that the progression of the main character from entering the world to becoming king was a little to quick. I would have liked a bit more in between. Will definitely buy the next in the series...!!!

could have been so much better......

The story by itself is actually surprisingly good, and written well, the characters are likeable. The main problem is the Narrator's, if you're Irish, Scottish or Russian be prepared to cringe at the butchering of your accent. Honestly they couldn't have been seriously trying to do the accents justice because at stage's they sound as if they've changed accent completely 😂

Overpowered goodness

The MC is a total badass. He is fortunate to have an amazing starting race. A chimera with the best of multiple races. The term chimera also describes this book, it has been blended with all of the goodness!!!! The MC has a brain, a solid team and has a funny companion what more could a reader ask for!?

Dave Willmarth shots far but misses in the end

Let’s first start with Dave Willmarth is an excellent writer. I think his failure is that the Main Character is a Monster Race and does multiple things that would piss off the Dwarfs but they are like ya it’s cool. Also we all know in games a level 9 isn’t going to take out a ?? Boss. Max’s ability to just walk over people at least twice his level is unreasonable. Also one of my large gripes is that he is attempting to make characters the I would say are chaotic neutral but immediately go super hero lawful good in every situation. They are super understanding of everything. I just felt like Max was not a completely developed character and acted more scripted. Also when he does a big no no and ninja loots something everyone is like ya that’s fine no biggie. I just can’t relate to the character and am finding myself hating and despising him. That being said the book is good but don’t expect the MC to move from the I am a lovable monster character and everyone doesn’t care. Good filler series while you wait for the ones you love to be released

Amazing narration, the rest.. not so much...

First of, narration is fabulous! Story tho... if you like a MC that is completely flat and everyone just love because of reasons, and a story that, within the 2 first levels lets the Mc get blessed by gods, randomly finds a priceless artifact lost to the ages, gets a race so OP that he literally can’t die and is way above everyone when it comes to abilities without even trying, then this book might be for you! For me tho... amazingly boring and unrelatable

Snark! Snark everywhere!

Another great LitRPG book in an ever increasing number to join my library of late! Our MC Max finds himself in a charming fantasy world accompanied by a snarky leprechaun, and an even snarkier interface, and I love it! The humor in this book is pretty consistent, and balanced by genuinely touching moments of sorrow, along with loads of action. The character sheet reading is infrequent, which I appreciate since those moments can slow the story down. Nor are any character sheets miles long, so that’s pretty nice. Max, as a protagonist, is both believable, and endearing. I know quite a few soldiers, and I found myself thinking, yep, that’s what my buddy would do in that situation! Red is hilarious, and I found myself enjoying her every appearance. The other characters, without spoiling too much, play their parts well, and I especially appreciated the author’s portrayal of Orcs as intelligent, civilized beings with a strong sense of honor, and avoiding the “primitive morons living in squalor” trope. Both narrators performed extremely well, and I always appreciate a female narrator to voice female characters, because it’s a thousand times better than any gent’s falsetto (Jeff Hays being the exception, and even he’s better when accompanied by Annie Elicott or another female narrator). Both Daniel Wisniewski and Jessica Threet have a fantastic range of accents and voices to lend to this story. Overall, I really enjoyed this, and if you enjoy a good fantasy romp in the LitRPG style, I think you will too! This was the first book by Dave Wilmarth that I’ve tried, finding the summary over on Reddit when poking around for news on Dungeon Lord Book 5, and I’m glad I took the plunge! I definitely plan on listening to more of his work, thanks to this. And I am very much looking forward to book 2 in this series!

Great book and narration is amazing.

Dan and Jessica do a fantastic job narrating the story by Dave Willmarth. LitRPG fans rejoice! Sadly, playback is currently broken on Alexa enabled devices. Audible app and Bluetooth is a decent workaround until it gets fixed though.

This is one that you don't want to end and keep hoping there's more time left. So, all I have to say is, hurry, hurry, hurry and let's get the next one released.

Excellent story and superb narration!

This is a great story. A little different take on died and sent to a new world trope. I really like the character development. The narration is superb! I really hope to hear more of these two narrators in the future books and different authors works as well. They made the story come to life. Some of the better narration I’ve heard. Highly recommend this one. It’s definitely worth the credit.

Predictable and cheesy

I'm an avid fan of this genre. That being said, I wanted to like it... But I can't recommend this to a veteran of LitRPG. There's potential if you can get over the lack of imagination and predictability.

Gary Sue

I like the premise that he was going for and overall enjoyed the first half of the book, but as soon as he meets others the flaws start coming out. The book turned into a total “nerd fantasy” everyone loves the MC can’t be wrong and if you don’t you’re evil. He is invincible there is no other way to explain a lvl 2 beating lvl 15-20 enemies. I’m 10 hours in I’m not looking forward to finishing this drivel.
