Bad nights – followed by bad days

This was a book that started really great and just went downhill from there. The plot was good, the first couple of chapters pull you in, but then it just fails to deliver on such initial promise.

The h and H had an unrealistic romance on the run. The H had sustained so many injuries, and endured so much physically, that he should have been in hospital, but instead after a quick hot shower he was ready for sex. The h had been in mourning for 18 months for her murdered husband (something described with about as much emotion as reading a shopping list), and yet jumps into bed with a man she has known for 2 days – and this was after been shot at, chased, burnt out of her childhood holiday home, bitten by a mountain lion, hiding overnight in a cave, enduring another shootout, and then finding that she is now a revenge target for a fanatical terrorist. Among all this happening there was really just no feeling of chemistry between them. The sex scenes were awful – displaying a basic lack of biological knowledge and absolutely no atmosphere or build up beforehand.

This book seems to take all the perfect ingredients of a decent romantic suspense but then threw everything into the pot and leaves the reader feeling they only have half the story. The h’s husband was shot and died in her arms but we have no detail – we don’t even know why it happened, or if the killer was caught. The H was involved in some sort of military tragedy but again we are given no detail or anything to make us care. The H runs a security company that was apparently founded after three military type guys (an obvious set up for future books) bonded during a night in jail after a bar fight. After only a year of operation they seem to have unlimited resources but still manage to be astoundingly incompetent – they give their safe house details, and security code to a client who they did not trust and they knew was using a false identity. They work undercover, but their real names, office location and photos are on their website – so another villain just locates them using Google! They use two planes, and two army gliders to launch a rescue operation, but then use tranquilizer darts “to keep things quiet” – have they not heard of gun silencers? - and then they fail to equip themselves with any sort of communication device, so cannot contact each other during the operation!

I was also irritated by a pointless scenario where the h is sooo proud of herself when she manages to cook an apple pie WITHOUT A RECIPE and muses that one of the hero’s friends seems to like her better because of it. I thought the days had gone when a woman was judged by her cooking ability - she is supposed to be a psychology professor! However I guess she was just an old fashioned gal after all when she decides, after knowing the H for four days, to quit her job, leave her home, relocate to another city and get married. Is there no time for a date before making this decision?

All in all this was a really disappointing book from an author who usually delivers great romances. There was lot happening but somehow I was just found the whole book fairly boring, and completely fail to understand why the H and h decide to get married so quickly. I felt there was no great emotion, no overwhelming lust, and definitely no deep feelings of love. It was like biting into a warm, rich and golden apple pie (!) and finding it tastes of nothing.
