hated the reader and the performance

Would you try another book written by Carl Hiaasen or narrated by Lance Fuller?

I so hated the reader and his performance which is stilted and without emotion in the first chapter I simply couldn't get any further than the first 10 minutes. I tried more than once thinking it might be my mood but I couldn't do it! Try listening before you buy. Shame as I usually like Carl Hiaasen for his mad humour.

Would you ever listen to anything by Carl Hiaasen again?

Maybe if by a different reader or I'll download to my Kindle and try on that.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lance Fuller’s performances?

NO

Narrator Not Great

If you could sum up Bad Monkey in three words, what would they be?

Bring Back Skink

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bad Monkey?

Hurricane Love Scene

What three words best describe Lance Fuller’s voice?

Not Very Good

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Lance Fullers narration almost put me off - but it takes a heck of a lot before I give up on a book and eventually I got used to it and was laughing inappropriately as I usually do with a Carl Hiaasen book.

Will read the book

Have tried several times to get into the story but had to give up after only three chapters. I have enjoyed other Carl Hiassen books but as has been said before the narrator does the author no service. He reads it rather than narrates it. His voice is flat and I imagine a schoolboy demonstrating his annunciation in an oral exam. This is not his genre. This is one of those occasions when you’d do better to read the book for yourself. Sorry

Ruined by Narration

I love Hiaasen, his books are great, but listening to this (rather than reading it) is unspeakably bad. Men, women, old, young, every line is read in exactly the same deadpan voice. Given Hiaasen's novels are all about conversation, this makes the book almost impossible to follow. The stupid thing is his other novels have great narrators. Buy the physical book instead, as its almost certainly excellent when read any way other than by this narrator.

And if you really need it read to you, get Stephen Hawking to do it as he would do a better job.

I'd give it no stars if I could.

Good author, poor natrator

My wife and I could not continue to listen to the rather high-pitched narrators voice.

Hilarious Simian based romp

Would you consider the audio edition of Bad Monkey to be better than the print version?

Yes, the audio edition performed by Lance almost put you in the Bahamas amongst the crazy antics of crime and property development.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Bad Monkey?

The most memorable moment was a very painful scene where said bad monkey bit deep into a certain part of a character's anatomy with side splitting consequences.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The storm descends on to the Bahamian island while the main villain struggles in his ever more debilitated state to remain in control of his destiny.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did not want to listen to this rich text in one sitting as like a fine wine you take well savoured sips to fully appreciate it like the hilarious but yet complex story.

Any additional comments?

Once more Hiaason takes comedy and crime to new heights but be prepared this is a deluxe piece as Lance reads so well.

Great story and very funny in places

I really struggled with the narration - quite flat and monotone, which made it really hard to listen to. However the story was worth it I thought, silly in places but it was fun overall.

Wooden performance, Unsympathetic characters

Despite having enjoyed earlier Hiassen books, I absolutely hated the narrator's wooden rendition of this particular tale. Furthermore, bar one cliched Bahamian island dweller, every single one of the characters proved utterly unsympathetic. I toughed it out to the end in hope of some redemption. Eleven hours that I'll not get back.
I'll stick to the early stuff.

Appalling narration

A decent Carl Hiaasen book, but the narrator is intolerable. I gave up, returned it and bought the physical book instead.

Narrator can’t pronounce “conch”

Or “gyro.” Or “Bimini.” Or “Flaco.”

As usual, Hiaasen writes a gripping story that’s a cynical romp through South Florida - which is then obliterated by the narrator. Is he family or something? How the hell does anyone mispronounce “gyro” in this day and age? Let alone “conch”? Carl, I’ll do your next book for free, and I’ll do it better.
