Episode 2: The Day of the Dead – When the Dead Come Home
What if death was not the end of the journey, but a passage into another world? And what if, once a year, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin enough for those we have lost to find their way home?
Across Mexico, as October gives way to November, candles are lit, marigolds are scattered, and photographs of departed loved ones are placed upon beautifully decorated altars. Families gather in homes and cemeteries to share food, tell stories, and remember those who have gone before them.
This is Día de los Muertos – the Day of the Dead. A celebration of life, death, memory, and the enduring bonds between the living and the departed.
In this episode of Mythic Albion: The Americas, we journey into the heart of one of Mexico's most fascinating traditions, exploring the ancient beliefs and evolving customs that have shaped this remarkable celebration.
We discover the Mexica underworld of Mictlan, a distant realm ruled by the fearsome Lord and Lady of the Dead, and follow the perilous journey souls were believed to face beyond the world of the living. We explore the profound changes brought by the Spanish conquest, and how Indigenous traditions and Catholic observances developed over generations into the celebrations we recognise today.
Along the way, we uncover the meaning behind the ofrenda, the colourful altar prepared for the departed; the golden marigolds believed to help guide the spirits home; and the story of La Catrina, the elegant skeleton whose origins reveal a darker satire of vanity, wealth, and social status.
But beneath the flowers, painted skulls, and flickering candlelight lies something more universal: our desire to keep those we love close, even after death has taken them from us.
Because perhaps the dead are never entirely gone. Perhaps they live on in the stories we tell, the traditions we preserve, and the memories we carry.
So join me as we cross the boundary between memory and myth, and discover why, during the Day of the Dead, the past feels almost close enough to touch.
This is Mythic Albion: The Americas – exploring the folklore, legends, and ancient mysteries of a continent where the old stories never truly die.
