John’s own obsession started somewhere unexpected: the video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance pulled him in so hard it eventually took him from a marketing career into making medieval history content full-time. From there, the conversation digs into one of history’s strangest facts: it took people living through the fall of the Roman Empire years, sometimes decades, to even realize it had happened — John points to complaints like “nobody has fixed the roads in 10 years” as the kind of slow-motion collapse people lived inside without naming it, and argues the fall actually strengthened a lot of local communities in the process. That opens into a bigger question: how closely do modern anxieties about population decline, declining birth rates, and “having kids as a financial decision” mirror warnings a Greek philosopher gave 500 years before Rome even fell — and what happens to a country once it starts dismantling the founding myths that built it. The second half traces how much of Rome actually survived through the Church after the fall, how monks became the era’s cultural commentators, how the Crusades actually worked (and how muddled our modern understanding of them has become), and how English history shifted through the Vikings, the Normans, and figures like Alfred the Great. It closes on maybe the most striking idea of the whole conversation: medieval Catholicism gave people a worldview that functioned a lot like The Truman Show — a constant, lived sense that you were always being watched, by demons or angels, wherever you went. ***TIMESTAMPS*** 0:00 - Julian’s Knight’s Tale, John’s Kingdom Come, Rome’s SLOW Fall 8:28 - Rome Parallels, Birth Rates, Silk Pajamas & Founding MYTHS 25:54 - Charlemagne, Anglo-Saxons, Church as Rome’s Heir & Dead MONOCULTURE 37:34 - Monks as Commentators, Aryan Christianity & Crusades UNPACKED 48:45 - Spoken Word, Leaders in the Bible, Alfred the Great & NORMANS 58:58 - Vikings, Normans, Medieval Space & The Truman SHOW Worldview @JulianDoreyDaily Learn more about your ad choices.
