Tom Johnson is an American journalist and former chief executive of The Los Angeles Times and CNN. His distinguished career spans journalism, political service and public advocacy.

He began his career at the Macon Telegraph in Georgia before becoming a White House Fellow and serving as an assistant press secretary to President Lyndon B. Johnson. He later led The Los Angeles Times and became president of CNN, working alongside founder Ted Turner during the network’s development as a major force in global news.

In his memoir, Driven: A Life in Public Service and Journalism from LBJ to CNN, Johnson reflects on politics, media leadership and the responsibilities of journalism. He also speaks candidly about his personal experience of depression, using his platform to challenge mental health stigma and promote recovery.

In retirement, he has continued his public service through advocacy for mental health treatment, addiction recovery and medical research. His life offers a compelling perspective on leadership, ambition, the media’s influence, and finding purpose through helping others.
