On February 13, 2002, Waylon Jennings — the gravel-voiced outlaw whose independence, restless spirit, and unmistakable sound helped redefine country music — died from complications of diabetes at his home in Chandler, Arizona, at the age of 64. Jennings had spent more than four decades challenging Nashville convention through albums including Honky Tonk Heroes and Lonesome, On’ry and Mean, while songs like “Luckenbach, Texas,” and “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” made him one of the most recognizable figures in American music. Alongside Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser, Jennings helped create the outlaw-country movement — a renegade community built on artistic freedom, hard living, and defiance of the Nashville establishment.
