When a priceless platinum-and-diamond collar vanishes at the Mid-Atlantic Classic Kennel Club Invitational—Best in Show at the Spencer Inn, it looks like the ultimate high-society theft. But when two women connected to the glittering event are murdered in quick succession, the case explodes into something far more deadly.
Mac Faraday and his troublemaking German Shepherd, Gnarly, dive headfirst into the glamorous, cutthroat world of championship dog shows. Amidst perfectly groomed champions worth small fortunes, ruthless competitors, and million-dollar egos, the trail leads to a missing Irish Wolfhound whose value goes well beyond his blue-blood pedigree.
As tensions rise between Spencer PD and the county sheriff's office, Mac's team races to untangle a web of greed, betrayal, and long-buried secrets—all while the elegant resort descends into delightful canine chaos. With show dogs of every shape and size turning the Spencer Inn into their personal playground, Gnarly does what he does best: stir up trouble and sniff out the truth.
Fast-paced, laugh-out-loud funny, and packed with four-legged mischief, Best in Murder proves that in the high-stakes world of Best in Show, the biggest prizes come with the deadliest risks. I read a lot of books and I have to admit I have not read a book that I have enjoyed quite as much as this one in a long time. It definitely gets a five star review and I only wish I could give it more stars, I loved it that much.
Word of warning don't read it with other people in the room because explaining why you are laughing so much doesn't do it justice and to be honest neither will this review. My mum got fed up of asking now what's happened and has started listening to the books herself.
I had laughing, chuckling, tears and maybe I might even have cheered, I was that caught up in the story. There was so much going on that it will be hard to explain why it was SO GOOD, without giving anything away. So, I will say I loved the characters and would find it hard pressed to choice which one was my favourite or even which situation I liked most. Even having read the book and knowing what was coming I still found myself smiling and laughing. Of course the animals were just as delightful as the characters. I would love it if this was made into a movie.
As for the cases, yes I said there was a lot going on, they were really well worked and the story never slowed down. They solved one and on to the next problem or situation. I can't wait for the next book.
A morning jog leads mayor Gnarly to a badly beaten woman, who claims her Baby has been stolen before failing into coma and then he finds a second body. At the same time a high tec businessman reports his show dog wearing a priceless collar has gone missing. Mac and Gnarly find themselves heading to the Spencer Inn to attend a dog show and question suspects. Mac's half brother David has been asked to step up and be acting sheriff for the next town over. Before he can do more than sit in his squeaky chair he is dealing with a house fire, murder and a leak in his department. Are the cases connected? and can the brothers get to the bottom of the problem before the Spencer Inn is destroyed by biker gangs or dogs? Or before David loses his new job.
There is so much more going on and I said my review wouldn't do it justice, so I will just finish with do yourself a favour and read it yourself.
I liked the narrator. He would definitely get a show medal of his own for his performance in this great story. One that I will be listening to again.
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review
