Three men who believe themselves to be the Teacher, the Messenger and the Awakened share a locked ward, get along like brothers, and regard the hospital staff as the only genuinely disturbed people in the building. A fourth patient, who appears on no list, lies with the blanket over his head and sighs.
When the consultant schedules them all for a lobotomy, they climb the highest mountain on earth without leaving the ward and ask God to make the human race slightly wiser. The results are not encouraging. They then try the opposite.
Narrated by a medical student who watched the whole of it on tape, this is a comedy about faith, psychiatry and the durable human habit of curing anybody who says something true. It is ecumenical, irreverent, and entirely unwilling to tell you which of its characters is well.
