Rule #1: Never work with your enemy.

Rule #2: Definitely don't sleep with him either.

Rule #3: Never get emotionally invested in your quirky small hometown.

Unfortunately, I've broken all three rules…

When a career-ending scandal sends me back to Maplewood, Vermont, I need to lay low and figure out my next steps. Instead, I find my hometown in crisis. The local economy is struggling, the beloved Maple Festival has been stolen by a rival town, and I'm forced to work side by side with Mayor Gabriel Harding, my childhood rival and the town's optimistic hometown hero.

Helping Gabe save Maplewood should be simple. I'm a political strategist. He's a small-town mayor. Together, we're supposed to save Maplewood.

The problem? Gabe refuses to see me as the villain I think I am. Every time I push him away, he fights harder for me, for this town, and for the future neither of us imagined. Somewhere between arguing over town budgets, getting snowed in together, and one ill-advised one-night-stand, our enemies-to-lovers rivalry turns into an unexpected pregnancy. Apparently, saving a small town requires public humiliation, emotional vulnerability, forced proximity … and an alarming amount of maple syrup.

As I fight to bring the Maple Festival back to town, I uncover a dangerous corporate conspiracy, become the target of powerful enemies, and discover someone wants Maplewood to fail.

Now we're fighting for our town, our future and the family we never saw coming.

Because falling for my enemy was never part of the plan.

Neither was becoming a family.

Sabrina’s decision to do the right thing has damaged the career and forced her to return to Maplewood, while she regroups and see what happens next. When the town loses the Maple Festival the economic hit will be severe she is recruited to help however that means working with her high school nemesis Gabe.

Gabe is the mayor who is trying to do his best for the town even if they don’t agree. He knows that working with Sabrina will be a challenge however once he can’t deny the progress that she and her unlikely team have made. As they work together the sparks fly and an unexpected pregnancy will have them both facing their life choices.

A part of what makes Sabrina and Gabe perfect together as they see each other for who they are and the suspense part of the story as well as the rival town aspect adds some intrigue. The audio performance of Stella Hunter brings out both the insecurities and strength of Sabrina while Brandon Francis allows us to experience what an awesome man that Gabe is and how Sabrina becomes his everything.

Sugar and Shadows is the third book in the Maplewood series. It contains the entire story for Gabe and Sabrina, but there is a Maplewood storyline that is helpful to have listened to the other books. It could be listened to as a standalone story, but I prefer it as part of the series.

This is a surprise pregnancy story, however, the characters do act responsibly. Sometimes things just happen. I like seeing the story of someone who plans everything having to deal with the unexpected. I also liked that the main characters each had some unique (unpopular) character traits.

I listened to the audiobook performed by Brandon Francis and Stella Hunter. They both did a fabulous job and I would listen to both of them again.

I received a copy of this audiobook at my request and the opinions here are my own

Sabrina's and Gabe's story was fun and full of "what's next" moments. I liked that things were discussed in a reasonable amount of time and the author didn't rely on the miscommunication trope to run the show. I love the side characters and how involved they are in the story, not just a side note, which makes you look forward to seeing them again in the rest of the series. The narration was great in this. I loved the duet style and both narrators did a wonderful job keeping the multiple characters distinct.

Sweet vibes :-)

This is the story of Sabrina and Gabe who have been rivals since childhood. Recently, Sabrina is back in town and their old rivalry is back. Meanwhile, the luck of the town of Mapelwood is not getting any better (from the events of the previous books in the series). And after all those string of tragedies, they end up losing the bid to host their annual festival. This is particularly devastating as this festival is very important to the community and also for its finances. With Gabe (who is the mayor of the town) set to possibly lose his position due to all this, he teams up with Sabrina to try to get to the bottom of everything, and to get back the ability to host the festival.

This was such an enjoyable read! From all of the shenanigans Gabe and Sabrina got up to and the banter that comes with it, to the surprise pregnancy… all the way to them developing real feelings. And we certainly can’t forget about the suspense woven throughout the book (all of the other books within this series). It was all just complete gold! I really love this little town and this series tbh! Whatever Daphne Elliot writes next, I’m SAT!

The narration was performed beautifully by Stella Hunter and Brandon Francis! They both captured the characters and their personalities, as well and the overall vibes of the story perfectly! 10/10!

Sabrina has come back to Maplewood and is set up on a blind date by her mother. Little does she know it's with the mayor! Gabe too has been sent on this date, and when the two see each other, all those feelings from school come back. Anger and dislike and insults coming full force these two start out on a foot that isn't going anywhere. That is until this small town begins to get Sabrina involved in getting the festival back. Forced together, the two have to collaborate to win people over and get information. That doesn't make them like each other though. And all this anger and frustration is just foreplay. Off the charts chemistry, total opposites working for the same outcome and worming into each other's hearts, the story flies by. But there are many obstacles and surprises in their adventure to get the festival back. Layers to unfold, fantastic characters, small town nosiness and an enemies to lovers romance that kept me engaged for hours, Elliot had my heart.

Brandon Francis and Stella Hunter are perfect together. Francis is Gabe, people pleasing on the outside, needing to escape on the inside, he plays him with skill and emotion. Hunter grabs onto the smart and spunky Sabrina, finding what is important to her with all the feels. Listening to this was a breath of fresh air and highly recommend it!
