Award-winning broadcaster Iain Dale has led a life full of incident and success but also some very public failures. In this refreshingly honest account of his life and careers in business, politics and media, he tells all for the first time.

With the same raw candour that earns him 750,000 weekly listeners, he recounts his journey from driving a combine harvester at age eight to driving the national conversation on LBC, taking in his encounters with a host of household names, including HM Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Cliff Richard, Kylie Minogue, Joan Rivers, Jennifer Saunders, the Duchess of York, Dame Joan Collins, Jeremy Paxman, David Dimbleby, Kevin Keegan, Paul Gascoigne, Harry Redknapp. Miranda Hart, Olivia Newton-John, Terry Pratchett and twelve of our fifty-eight Prime Ministers.

He also reflects movingly on coming out at age forty, coming to terms with his thwarted political aspirations, and the heartbreaking phone-ins that have made him 'the friend they've never met' to millions.

This is the ultimate insider's guide to the corridors of power and the pressures of the studio. Whether he's nearly throwing up on Margaret Thatcher, coming to blows with senior MPs or accidentally calling the Archbishop of Canterbury something less than pious on live radio, this is Iain Dale off-air and unfiltered.

Fascinating detail linking lots of stories and people Iain Dale has previously talked about on this long running podcasts.
But did nobody listen to this before putting it on Audible; I’m on Ch8 and it’s had at least four mid-edits so far. Never had that in an Audible book before.

I did not know this presenter other than his name and catching him by mistake on Lbc sometimes...I enjoyed a good half of the 15 hrs...he is smug and I found his chapter 6 not racy at all but rather cautious and dull...otherwise I like his voice and the stories about presenting and all that goes with it was entertaining..also his mentions of politicians he met and knew...loved all that...any more to come??? I was hoping to hear him talk about Steve Allen .. he merely called him a legend and that was it.

I loved the book. A good mix of personal life and professional experience, often surprising to hear how much personal determination and belief has been expressed and stood by and made an impact, a look behind the scenes of life in politics and broadcasting. Also, highlights the importance of critical thinking and common sense when we read only headlines of stories. Refreshingly frank, it is Iain’s account of his farming background, decades of life in politics, the huge personal undertaking of political candidates and those around them, and so much more. If you are a regular listener, a few of the lighter-hearted stories will be familiar, but the greasy pole, and other political anecdotes are a great read/listen, and I loved the personal chapters too, in fact, more would have been good, intertwined with the rest. Well written and narrated, a very enjoyable audible listen. Iain, no, you haven’t said too much!

Insightful, touching and fun real life account of life, politics and broadcasting

Real fan of Ian Dale’s work and great to hear his warts and all story of his life and opinions of people he has come across in his life. Unedited retakes are left in this version of the audiobook (including a massive cough) which are annoying and stops it getting five stars.

Great but unedited retakes left in

I really don’t share much of Iain’s politics but I developed a respect of how he approaches people and life in general. Very funny and witty.

A new found respect
