After years behind bars, former drug kingpin Bosco Maximuke is back on the streets, insisting he’s turned over a new leaf, and determined to win back the trust of his daughter.

But when members of the criminal network that replaced him start turning up dead, suspicion falls squarely on Bosco. With old enemies closing in, and a trail of bodies stretching from Inverness to the most remote corners of the Highlands, one thing is clear - someone is settling scores.

And then Bosco does the unthinkable. He asks DCI Jack Logan for help.

Logan wants nothing to do with him. Their history is bloody, bitter, and far from buried. But complicating matters is the fact that Bosco’s teenage daughter, Olivia, now lives under Logan’s roof.

With pressure mounting and the line between justice and revenge growing ever thinner, Logan must navigate a case where nothing is as it seems, and where trusting the wrong person could cost him everything.

Because in the Highlands, the devil you know might just be the most dangerous of all…BETTER THE DEVIL is the 22nd book in the internationally bestselling DCI Jack Logan series, from multi-award-winning Scottish crime fiction author, JD Kirk.

I waited so long for this book and it took me less than a day to blast through. Hooked. Some real laugh out loud moments… under the sea. No sign of Bob which must be a hint there’s a new Hoon book in the making. Hope for another heather book too. This character world is everything and more!

Really enjoyed having the team back together again. Angus King is a genius brings the story to life. Glad to see author seems to have found his way again last couple of stand alones haven’t been of usual quality or maybe it was the narrator that let them down? More please.

Great story telling wonderfully read by Angus King. All the loved characters and some good twists, but I don't like the cliff hanger ending with Jack's personal life. J D Kirk you are better than this.

Loved this but hated the ending

Loved it, I've been waiting desperately and knew I'd love it. From waking my husband up chortling at Joe's description of his wife to the very welcome return of an 'old' face. I was devastated no Bob content but hoping that means Barry is working on a new Hoon. SOON. I've struggled with a few of Jack's decisions the last 2 books, I feel like his character hasn't moved on personally and he's made a couple of decisions that have made me roll my eyes in frustration and think 'aww come on, really?!' Character's personal plots quite thin on the ground in this one too, but all in all a great listen. Made perfect by the wonderful Angus King. I've said it before, I'd pay this man to read the phone book aloud 🤣

Worth the wait?

There were two reviews when I started listening, one saying this book was boring… I didn't believe it for one moment! JD, Jack and the team boring? Never! If this book is boring, then I have really lost it and, whilst I have the odd senior moments, I still think matble jar is pretty full.
Phew 😰 JD, Jack and the team have been vindicated, non stop as you would expect and bloody fantastic- well worth the wait, laugjing at Tyler one minute and then holding my breath the next. To be honest JD couldn’t write them quick enough for me.
Good and bad ending as usual- how long until the next one.
Needless to say Angus King does a brilliant job of bringing the book to life, he is superb. I listen to a lot of books that he narrates but he will always be Jack and the team to me, even though he does a brilliant job with all the others, he just brings that extra something to these. LOVE HIM. What a team JD and Angus.
In the words of Craig Revell Horwood - FAB-U-LOUS!

Another of JD’s brilliant books!!
