(THIS IS A DIRECT CONTINUATION OF THE FIRST SERIES -- NOCTURNE)
Gideon, L'Sana, Ari and Frederick the First are now free of the System created prison and are filled with a strength that puts them on the door to Demi-Gods. They were stripped from their Daughter's lives for almost three decades. War has consumed the cosmos and their allies are losing, death creeping upon the skein of their futures. The System puppets the Sanctum, the Abyss, Consortium, and Issian Corporation as the predators at the gates. Gideon's Grandfather has risen to lead the forces of the alliance and they ask for Gideon to come to the front lines and help them stave off destruction but he denies them.
There is only one mission in his and L'Sana's eyes, to free their home, to save the people that stayed upon Erebus to defend and been under siege for decades, sacrificing their lives to keep the key of the entire War out of the System's hands. The Warcrows, led by their Daughter Shira and including their other Daughter, So'Sha, will be by their side. L'Sana has said so even against Gideon's wishes. She has sworn her Daughters will never again leave her side. The System has Blood Price and Gideon Sho has made a promise it will pay it.

I've been playing World of Warcraft off and on for over 20 years. I still maintain my subscription even when life gets too busy to actually play. So while LitRPG isn't my usual audiobook genre, I'm certainly familiar with gaming worlds, mechanics, and character progression. I was invited to listen to this audiobook, and I was curious to see how I'd enjoy the genre.
My biggest challenge was jumping into what felt like the middle of an established series. Imagine logging into a game you've never played before, being handed a high-level character, and being expected to understand the rules, abilities, and world around you. That's a little how I felt. There was clearly an established world and storyline, but without the earlier context, I struggled to fully connect with what was happening.
However, the narration was EXCELLENT! Michael Norman Johnson and Jessica Threet did a fabulous job bringing the story to life. Their performances kept me listening even when the science-fiction elements weren't particularly my cup of tea. I also felt that J.D. Glasscock's first-person writing style lends itself especially well to audio. There's a considerable amount of internal dialogue and conversational storytelling that I suspect works better when performed than it might for me on the printed page.
The installments are relatively quick listens at around three hours each, and I actually continued into the next one. Ultimately, though, the story itself didn't leave a lasting impression on me. The heavier sci-fi elements, particularly the interactions with machines and technology, aren't really what I gravitate toward. Would I voluntarily continue the series? Probably not. But that doesn't mean I think it's a bad audiobook. I suspect listeners already invested in this world and its characters will have a much stronger connection to the story, and the excellent narration certainly adds to the experience. For me, this was a case of appreciating the audiobook's performance more than connecting with the material.
⭐ 3 stars overall - excellent narration, but the story wasn't quite my genre.
