Summary

A gifted bookbinder and a cursed immortal are bound together by a deadly bargain in this new epic romantasy trilogy perfect for fans of WHEN THE MOON HATCHED, QUICKSILVER and SHIELD OF SPARROWS

Some bargains are sealed with blood. . . Others with fire. . . The deadliest are sealed with a kiss. . .

Saige Grayson has always believed stories could heal. The capital’s most promising bookbinder, she works through chronic pain to restore other people’s treasures. But when her debt collector decides her bookbinding talent is worth more than coin, Saige is traded to the Azkari – an immortal race forged by the gods for war.

Her only chance of survival lies with Archer, a fallen Azkari general imprisoned beside her – cursed, dangerous and impossible to ignore. He offers her a way out, and in return Saige must help him retrieve and restore an ancient book – one made of living magic, powerful enough to stop a great evil . . . or unleash it.

As Saige works with Archer, the tome begins to awaken something dark – both within the realm and in her. With enemies closing in and buried memories resurfacing, they must decide what they’re willing to sacrifice: their freedom, their fragile trust . . . or the spark that could ignite the world.

‘This world drew me in and let me walk beside the characters. Such a beautiful, gritty, unique world with all the passion and yearning I devour in fantasy romance. Scheuerer knocked this out of the water.’ LJ Andrews, international bestselling author of The Ever Seas and Broken Souls and Bones

‘I’m utterly obsessed with this book. From the very first page, all I wanted to do was read. Helen gives us everything we love in fantasy romance—intriguing lore, fast-paced action, and those steamy, angsty moments and tension that make us weak in the knees.’ Melissa K. Roehrich, New York Times bestselling author

TROPES:

Touch her and die

‘A gorgeous, luscious fantasy . . . Helen Scheuerer continues to be one of my favourite writers with her fantastic new series and its fierce, bookish heroine!’ Sable Sorensen, #1 internationally bestselling author of Dire Bound

I enjoyed this book. Lacked pace I felt until the last few chapters when it really picked up. The ending was fab and I wasn’t expecting it. I liked the characters and building, but again felt a bit drawn out for me in places. Some funny bits in it which made me laugh. Nevertheless, I read to the end and I will read bk 2 to know what happens next. Audio was brilliant.

A good read

4.5 ⭐'s, I loved the Legends of and Ashes of Thezmarr series so this was a highly anticipated, must read/listen book for me and I wasn't disappointed. As it's a whole new story it took me a little while to get in to the world and characters (which is to be expected - the world needs to be built and the scenes set and all) and once it got going it's everything I love about Helen Scheuerer's books. I love, Saige, that she's a more mature FMC and really likeable, the book binder take and how it relates to the plot (knowledge is power!) and then we have Archer - the grumpy in the grumpy sunshine dynamic, but he's yummy, the brooding warrior with a tortured past that melts for her sort of MMC that we all love, I loved their relationship and banter, and I'm enjoying the side characters/found family so far and know I will enjoy those more as the series goes on. Overall it's such an enjoyable start to a new series that I didn't want to put down. There were also a few parts in this that I didn't see coming - either because I was so engrossed I missed the clues, they were so subtle I didn't guess beforehand or I'm just gormless 😆 and that ending 👀😬 I don't know how that's going to be overcome but I can't wait to find out!

I am a huge fan of Helen Scheuerer, so I pre-ordered this as soon as I heard about it. I read The Book Binder, which is the prequel novella, and that left me really intrigued about what would happen in this book. I absolutely loved it. I loved the characters, I loved the grumpiness of the MMC and the fact that the FMC is in her mind thirties, rather than her another sassy 18 year old. The story was great, I loved the progression and the banter, and the ending left me very eager for book two! My only issue was that the narrators didn't always differentiate enough between character voices, meaning there were a few occasions where I didn't immediately know who was speaking, or whether it was thoughts they were expressing. However, overall it was really enjoyable and book two can't come soon enough.

Wow!
