(P)2026 PD Collection LLCCritic reviews
“The Maltese Falcon is not only probably the best detective story we have ever read, it is an exceedingly well-written novel.”
(The Times Literary Supplement (UK))“Hammett’s prose is clean and entirely unique. His characters are as sharply and economically defined as any in American fiction.”
(The New York Times)“Like Wilkie Collins and Arthur Conan Doyle, Hammett was an original who created a profoundly influential literary template that gives him classic status.”
(The Guardian)“After reading The Maltese Falcon, I went mooning about in a daze of love such as I had not known for any character in literature since I encountered Sir Launcelot.”
(Dorothy Parker, The New Yorker)“The best detective story America has yet produced.”
(Alexander Woolcott, author, actor, journalist, and critic )Perhaps the writing style is too archaic for my old brain? Perhaps it's the way the female thinks she can twirl any man around her fingers? Perhaps it just too noir? Whatever, I gave up after almost 2 hours of being unable to get to grips with it.
