I can’t believe I have reached the age of 48 and have never read this book. So I got the audio version and at almost fifty hours of listening was prepared to be a little bored. But what a story!
Beautifully written and narrated. Twists and turns and a vibrant plot full of characters.

Negatives: as is typical of books from this era, some of the dialogue was a bit long winded and some of the relationships were a touch concerning.
Pros: everything else! This is a great book, I was gripped from start to end. Plot is excellent, characters are fleshed out and intriguing, the character growth of Dantes and others was rewarding, and the narration brought it all to life. Different view points added a layer of mystery, fascination amd empathy as the plan unfolds.
Some sections seem pointless and unnecessary initially but it all ties in and is relevant. Well worth a listen, I'll be replaying this for sure

I have been a big fan of this book, having enjoyed the Bill Homewood recording, though I found his female characters quite irritating. David Rintoul has a more modern style, less theatrical and stylised than Bill Homewood without the irritating voices.

However, it lost some of the characterisation that Bill Homewood achieved. Homewood has distinguishable voices for each character, wonderful accents for the different nationalities. Rintoul’s characters sounded very similar to each other and I often couldn’t tell who was speaking. A few accents were half hearted and not consistent.

So whilst I enjoyed his narration, I missed the variety of Homewood.

The story itself is a wonderful saga - entirely bonkers, but what a plot! It could do with a fair bit of editing to slim down some of the over-lengthy scenes.

This more modern narration loses some characterisation

I love this story which contains characters and personalities that can be seen in today's very different world and society. Conversations can be very wordy so very different to today's economic speech but that is our loss I think. What a lesson for today's obsession with victimhood.

The narrator really brought this excellent story to life.
