About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Narrated by Academy Award Winner Viola Davis.

An extraordinary new courtroom drama from Sunday Times bestselling thriller author James Patterson and Academy Award winner Viola Davis. Get ready to meet the most unforgettable character in years.

All rise…for Judge Stone.

The most respected citizen in Union Springs, Alabama (population 3,314), is Judge Mary Stone. She holds two responsibilities sacred: running her family farm and presiding over her courtroom. Everything changes when she draws the most controversial case in the history of the South.

Criminally, it’s open-and-shut.

Ethically, there is no middle ground.

Essentially, it’s a choice between life and death.

No judge can satisfy everyone. It would be dangerous to try. But Judge Stone is willing to fight to bring justice to the people and place she loves.

An explosive legal thriller that will keep you turning pages until the stunning conclusion.

'The co-authors' seamless collaboration is highly successful - as good as a John Grisham page-turner' - THE SUNDAY TIMES

“The audiobook, narrated by Viola Davis herself, adds an extra cinematic edge; you'll be looking for excuses to keep listening.” TAYLA HONEBEEK, THE MIRROR

This book has a strong storyline that is gripping and powerfully human. It tackles some very sensitive issues. The characters are so interesting and real, and Judge Stone, both formidable and human, is a true star. Viola Davis's personal experiences have highly influenced this novel, and I highly recommend reading her autobiography, Finding Me, immediately before or after this. The narration by Viola herself is a real bonus! Excellent read!

Gripping and powerfully human

I Loved how Viola Davis brought the story to life with her storytelling. I was captivated from start to finish.

Loved the entire storyline and narration.

I loved the way the discourse in the court room encompassed a triage of Judge Stone: The professional, no nonsense, fair judge, her thoughts & feelings for both Nova & Briana. I enjoyed the way her family background was in farming and her love for her horse, it gave a perspective into another aspect of black life that we very rarely see.
I was rather upset when her farm house was burnt down but was fascinated by the concept of a mobile home being erected so quickly.

This should be a film.

Full bodied and believable character. Viola Davis really made it special, handled a very difficult subject well without being overly depressing.
